In this assignment, I would like you to take a historical event and explain how it shaped U.S. race relations. Using Omi and Winant’s theory of racial formation, and specifically of racial projects, explain how your chosen event is a site for contested racial meanings and what material (physical and everyday manifestations) and general social consequences it had for those affected by its outcomes. You must describe what racial meanings looked like prior to the event, and how it was transformed after the event.
