Signature Assignment #3
Project OverviewProgram Advocacy and Capacity Building Presentation
You can have the best physical activity program around, but you also need to develop a range of communication strategies to disseminate the impact your program is having. Furthermore, you must become comfortable advocating for your programmatic needs in a way that will influence key stakeholders and decision-makers. For Signature Assignment #3, you will create an individual presentation to share your vision for your PE program, outline three (3) key priorities to build on strengths or extend areas of growth, and request tangible capacity or extended support(s) to achieve the outlined vision. The presentation format will be comparable to a School Board or School Administrator’s presentation. Signature Assignment #3 is associated with content presented in PET 585 Module 3.
RequirementsStep 1: Provide an Overview of Professional Setting and Context. Provide a rich description of your school and community context along with your role within the setting. Include an overview of your involvement in the school, district, state, and/or national professional initiatives or organizations. This is an introduction of yourself to the school board, so include relevant results from your StrengthsFinder inventory. They may know very little about your or your Physical Education program, your role and contributions to the school community (committees, leadership roles, advisory roles, coaching positions, etc.), and/or your current enrollment in a Master’s program.
Step 2: Showcase Your Strengths. Highlight the 3-4 key features of your Physical Education program/department, alignment with local, state, national policies, and the people, programs, or initiatives that have contributed to the development or establishment of these strengths.
Step 3: Share Your Vision. Share your vision for growth and improvement in your program. Include three priority areas for improvement (e.g., program weaknesses) that you identified from your program evaluation. Use this time to briefly describe the weakness (e.g., what is it, why is it a weakness, why it is detrimental, to whom is it detrimental, why is it a priority, etc.). Do not stop there; rather, share your vision for how this/these weaknesses could be transformed into strengths by approaching the challenge as an opportunity. Share your ideas for possible solutions, including what capacity needs to be built or fostered (e.g., people, funds, time, etc.), and how you propose taking a lead and being a part of the solution. Be sure to share and explain research or empirical evidence that aligns with/supports your vision.
Step 4: Request Support(s) to Build Capacity. This concluding section will briefly summarize your ask. Outline specifically the capacity and support needed (e.g., funds, time, professional development, etc.) to bring your vision to life. Be very clear and direct with your request. Provide a rationale for how the resources would be used and add value to the process. If appropriate, provide a timeline for implementation and your action plan. Describe your role in transforming your program. Describe how you envision developing as a leader and progressing towards being a transformative leader within your program, school, and community.
Step 5: Produce Written Executive Summary and Adobe Spark Slideshow to reflect the content from Steps 1-4.
Module Deliverables The assignment submission will include a written executive summary of the vision, priorities, and action plan/requests and a link to an Adobe Spark (Slideshow) visual representation of the presentation.
