Please see the below steps detailing the assignment and breakdown of points.
STEP 1 (5 points): Find a current news article about a crime/deviant event that has been committed within the past three weeks. Look for language within the article that lends itself to a sociological explanation of the criminal/deviant behavior using two of the theories of deviance. You should not Google “crime” or “deviance” to find a current events article related to crime and deviance; rather, check reputable online news sources or an actual article about a crime or deviant behavior. There are always major deviant acts each week that make the national and local news. Articles should be a minimum of 500 words, recent (within three weeks), relevant (related to crime/deviance), and from a reputable news source (Links to an external site.). Include the link to your article.
STEP 2 (10 points): Summarize the news article and criminal/deviant event described. The summary of the news article should be succinct, thorough, original, and accurate.
STEP 3 (10 points): Describe two theories that relate to your criminal/deviant news event. These theories are to be described in your own words. If you wish to cite from the text you may do so, but you should be able to prove to me that you understand these theories. A good way to go about this would be to assume that your reader knows nothing about these theories and to explain it to them as such.
STEP 4 (10 points): Apply each theory to your criminal/deviant news event. You should be able to show an understanding of the theory by utilizing extensive and specific details about the criminal/deviant event to back up the theory you are writing about.
STEP 5 (5 points): Discuss which theory you believe makes the most sense explaining your deviant event by using specific examples. Give well supported reasons as to why you think that theory is the most valid at explaining your criminal/deviant news event. Examples and/or information from the readings may be used to help support your argument.
