This is an applied ethics paper.
The minimum requirements are….
1. 1500-1800 words
2. Use some citation method
3. Use 3 main sources – Readings (from canvas) or Main textbook
a. You can use anything I posted in the supp. links pages for each topic but that does not count towards the 3 main reading materials.
b. material taken from the textbook, even if not explicitly assigned for that week, is allowed and will count towards the 3 main sources.
4. No outside source material
5. Must be an applied topic covered in the second unit of the class.
6. You must choose a documentary on the subject matter to base your paper on (think, it will act as the background basic information you will be working with). I have mentioned a few options and showed you how to pick your own doc in the paper instructions video lecture.
The Walkthrough
This is an applied ethics paper.
——-This means you will be making an ethical argument in your paper (ie, an argumentative paper choosing a position for or against something based on some ethical standard)
——-The ethical standard you use is up to you (based on the material covered). We went over many differing views (some from the textbook, some from my lecture material, some from readings posted to canvased and discussed in video lecture).
——-There was a week in which we discussed the basics of ethics (“The Ethics of it All”) and there are a few pdfs up, a PowerPoint lecture (in pdf), and some links for further review. Soble also reviews “Sex Ethics” in chapter 5 and depending on what subject matter you decide to write about, chapter 4 and 6 maybe of use to you as well. The individual topics have corresponding readings that should also assist in putting together what you think/your position.
——-Remember, the underlying purpose of the course is to develop an understanding of what YOU think about these issues given the material made available (though I would have been up for hearing a proposal on another topic or the use of outside material if ran by me first). So, I will not simply tell you what to write or what to write about (within the limits set and/or sanctioned).
The minimum requirements are….
1500-1800 words
——-Pretty sure this is self-explanatory. But to be clear, there is no maximum. Write to your heart’s desire.
Use some citation method
——-MLA, APA, Chicago style are the norm but it’s up to you what style you use.
Use 3 main sources – Readings (from canvas) or Main textbook
You can use anything I posted in the supp. links pages for each topic but that does not count towards the 3 main reading materials.
material taken from the textbook, even if not explicitly assigned for that week, is allowed and will count towards the 3 main sources.
——-My main aim with this restriction is to avoid using outside content or relying too heavily on the videos posted as a crutch in your work. Use of the Marino book and Soble’s anthology of papers (posted below) do count as towards the three main sources given we used them often in the course.
Links in case you don’t have them:
Patricia Marino ;b – Philosophy of Sex and Love ; An Opinionated Introduction-1.pdf
Philo of Sex Readings Soble-1.pdf
——-Of course, everything else (videos, papers, books) I linked on canvas is fair game to use as well but the main sources should be the textbook and the main (pdf) readings posted.
No outside source material
——-No outside sources. Obviously, I am not talking about the documentary you are going to be working with. That’s your choice. I went over this a few times in-class lectures and in the video covering the paper instructions. That is an acceptable “outside” source but I make that clear below and in multiple class meetings.
——-If you want to use an outside source I will allow it on a case-by-case basis. I have already cleared a few studies and the like but it’s getting kinda late in the game at this point.
Must be an applied topic covered in the second unit of the class.
——-Any topic covered in unit 2. I sent out an announcement and the topics are laid out in the modules for unit 2 with the corresponding readings. I don’t know what you want to write about, so I can’t tell you what your paper should be on besides that. Relationship practices/norms, gender roles, homosexuality (lifestyle, marriage, the case against being anti-lgbt), prudish versus promiscuity practices, porn, being a pro, etc… what interests YOU?
You must choose a documentary on the subject matter to base your paper on (think, it will act as the background basic information you will be working with). I have mentioned a few options and showed you how to pick your own doc in the paper instructions video lecture.
——-I didn’t realize I misworded this here. I meant to put up some non-exhaustive lists in the modules but never got to that. But as I went over the instructions on how to choose a documentary in the video lecture on the paper and in separate class lectures, mentioned options during my lectures, and even sent out at least one announcement telling students to email me if they need help finding a documentary, I didn’t think of this as much of an issue. In the end, you can choose the documentary that will help you cover the topic (ie, give you examples, cases, historical context, etc… that you can use in your paper.)
I attached the sources to choose 3 or more from.
