Integrated Research Essay Assignment
Composition 1
The Integrated Research Essay (IRE) is the major assignment of Composition 1. It is a 10-12 page paper due the final week of classes. This paper is divided into three segments that are each about 3-4 full pages long. In each of these segments, you will learn new concepts while building on tools you already have. Because it is such an important assignment, you will not be able to pass the class if you do not pass the Integrated Research Essay. The goal of this assignment sheet is to break down for you the individual segments of the paper and provide a loose overview of what is to come in class.
The paper itself is divided into three segments (or “sections”). Each segment has its own dedicated module on Canvas where you will find assignments, files, readings, and other pertinent materials to complete over the course of each segment. As we have all ready been doing with other skills and techniques in class, the modules will prove to be a great resource. For the rest of the semester, we will be working on these papers and so the modules are organized in such a way to divide the work between even parts.
What is the IRE, though? What will you need to complete? I’m glad you asked! For this assignment, you need to select a topic of your choice that has either a problem in need of a solution or is a two-sided issue. In three sections, you will introduce your topic, explore what the causes of the issue are, and propose your own solution/point-of-view. Each of these objectives have their own 3-4 page segment of the final paper. You will draft and peer review each segment and then, later, assemble it all into one revised 10-12 page essay.
Example IRE papers are available to you on Canvas in the relevant Module.
