The concept of diversity has long been a hot-button topic and concept that people are aware of in a general sense. At its core, diversity highlights complexities of the relationships between differences and organizational communication. Difference is communicatively constructed; this occurs through the development of discourses that shape the values and meanings that define particular forms of difference. It is only by exploring how certain differences become seen as “natural” that we can understand the processes through which they are communicatively constructed in the organizations we are involved with.
Directions:
For this assignment, think of a global organization that you have worked for, have interest in, or have used the products or services of.
Examine that organization’s website for their diversity policy. Additionally, find one news article about this organization’s diversity reputation, policy, and/or procedures.
Review the concepts of diversity as discussed in Chapters 8 and 9 from your textbook. Write a 2- to 3-page informative paper examining how diversity affects this organization’s communication. In your paper be sure to:
Identify the organization’s name, website, and news article you found, and explain why you chose this organization.
Explain how you believe diversity affects organizational communication at this organization.
Address how the organization manages diversity using at least four of the concepts presented in your textbook.
Discuss if you believe that diversity is an important aspect to this organization. Explain what cultural differences are important to this organization.
Examine how diversity is included as a part of this organization’s communication to its employees and to its customers. From what you have found, is diversity acknowledged in the same manner to its employees and its clients/customers?
Explain how the company’s diversity reflects its position as a global organization.
From your perspective, explain if you would change anything about how this organization manages diversity from an organizational communication standpoint. Why or why not? Consider the reading as a reference for this question.
Your essay should be supported with a minimum of two in-text citations. Provide your sources in a separate page in proper APA format. Your expository essay should be approximately 2–3 pages, aside from title and reference pages.
Your written work should be highly developed and include a sustained viewpoint and purpose.
