A Policy
A policy that the clinic abides by which is also an ethical public health principle is the respect for autonomy. This policy means the practicing physicians must abide by the patient’s decision-making choice regardless of what the results may be. It balances the right of the individuals with the health of the community by allowing this individual the freedom to make the best decision regarding their body and health without feeling pressured or forced into a decision by external influences (family and physicians).
However, I have witnessed how bad this policy can be in regard to people’s health. For example, we had a covid-19 positive patient who refused to take any forms of medication, treatment and refused to go to any urgent care or Emergency Department. The case was not vaccinated, and they had multiple comorbidities including diabetes, hypertension, and obesity. However, because of this policy, the physician could not force their belief or medical authority onto the person. A couple of days later, the case daughter called into the clinic to explain that they have convinced the case to seek treatment because she strongly refused to go to the emergency room because of no health insurance and lack of financial stability. However, when the clinic finally started the treatment process, she died the next day in the Emergency Department; she did not even get to pick up the medications. I believed that if we got rid of that policy at the time and forced the treatment process, she could have been alive (Morgan, 2021).
