Discussion 1:Comparing National School Reform LawsIn December 2015, a new national school reform initiative was signed into law. At that time, the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) replaced the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001. Use the questions to guide an original response and comments on the posts of at least two classmates.
Research the new legislation and NCLB. Compare and contrast the laws, citing 3 ways in which they are alike and 3 ways in which they are different.
Based on your NCLB experiences, how do you anticipate ESSA will change the way in which student achievement is approached in your educational setting?
What has been the most positive and most negative impact that NCLB has had on your school and its teachers? Do you expect the same impact under the new legislation? Why or why not?
Discussion 2:Clarifying the LinesAs we learned during this module, students do not give up their right to free speech at the schoolhouse gate, but schools must also ensure that the educational goals for all students are not compromised. Use the questions to guide an original response and comments on the posts of at least two classmates.
When have you experienced a situation that has blurred the line between student expression and school safety or discipline?
How did your school handle the situation?
If you have not experienced such a situation, find a case study, and describe how you/your school might react.
Discussion 3:Investigating ClaimsA freshman at the high school where you are principal runs into the office claiming that he was assaulted by three upperclassmen in the restroom. He reports that a teacher witnessed the incident but quickly left the scene. The student says he can identify the three students who assaulted him. Use the questions to guide an original response and comments on the posts of at least two classmates.
How should you go about investigating the student’s claim?
If it turns out there was an assault, can you or the school be held liable? Explain.
What should you do about the teacher who witnessed the incident but left the scene?
What additional steps might you take? What resources might you utilize
Discussion 4:Internship Scenario ResponseThis course began with a leadership scenario designed to motivate your thinking about the role of accountability in your work as a principal. Use the questions to guide an original response and comments to at least two peers. APA citations are required only in the original response.
