Covenants Chart

Yet, through time, the people changed their religious focus from the covenant to the Law that was contained in the Covenant. In the writings of the prophets, God promised the Jews a new covenant. But did they need one? Jesus seemed to think so!God offered the Israelites a covenant with a contractual form. He offered it at Mt. Sinai (aka Horeb) after they left Egypt. Christians call it the Old Covenant (2 Cor. 3:14; Heb 8:13) and will be referred to herein as the Mosaic Covenant. Moses mediated the covenant, acting as God’s agent between Him and His people. Read the covenant offered and accepted in Ex 19:5-8. The covenant was expanded in the “so-called Book of the Covenant” in chapters 20-23 (Wycliffe Bible Commentary, p. 67).The Mosaic Covenant (aka Sinaitic Covenant) did several things. It created the Theocracy, the religious-political structure of the nation of Israel, a government of God’s people governed by God’s terms. They were a kingdom with no earthly king yet. The Israelites became God’s own possession, a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation in Ywhw’s (i.e., God’s) eyes (Ex. 19:5-6).The Jewish people were offered another covenant, one relational in form. Jeremiah foretold of the New Covenant (Jer 31:31-34), which Jesus initiated at the Last Supper. Christians believe we draw near to God through the provisions promised under the New Covenant. You are to analyze the two covenants in relation to each other. Consider Hebrews 8-9. Note especially the references of the Apostle Paul in regards to this New Covenant and our relationship to it as members of the Church, the Body of Christ (1 Cor 11:25; 2 Cor 2:12, 3:6-7).  Finally, take note of the promise of Romans 11:25-27 when the covenant made with Israel will indeed become a reality. From what you read, develop seven to ten categories for comparing and contrasting the two covenants.Be thorough in your comparison and contrast.
