For this assignment, please read the two speeches in the “Ballot or the Bullet” and “I Have a Dream” page in this module, and then write a three paragraph response paper that answers this question:
Question: Using specific examples and events in her life as evidence, WHICH one of the two speeches would Anne Moody agree with more: Dr King or Malcolm X?
Your answer must use specific examples of events from her life to illustrate your argument.
Step One: In the first paragraph, compare and contrast the two speeches: “I Have a Dream” (excerpt) by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and “The Ballot or the Bullet” speech by Malcolm X.
What do they have in common? What ideas, messages, or calls to action do they share? In the same paragraph, describe how the speeches are different. How do their conclusions and recommendations contrast?
Step Two: In the second and third paragraphs, use several specific moments from Anne Moody’s life that you think show which speech she would agree with the most. The second and third paragraphs can also include content from the two speeches.
Some students argue that Anne Moody would side with Malcolm X; other students have asserted that she was more in tune in with MLK’s speech; some students have also argued that Anne Moody would agree with parts of both speeches. Other students stated that Anne’s views changed over time, and that “younger” Anne Moody would like one speech, but “older” Anne Moody would prefer the other.
I am interested in reading your analysis of the two speeches, and your explanation of what events in Anne Moody’s life relate with the speeches. History is about change over time, and the significance of historical changes.
• Please avoid using large block quotes from the speeches; more than three sentences is a ‘block quote.”
• Quotes from historical sources are great for showing off your analysis, but they cannot make your argument for you.
• Topic sentences and concluding sentences need to be in your own writing
There is NO “right answer” for this assignment (although, an infinite number or wrong ones) so there is no reason to google “Anne Moody” and expect Wikipedia or another student’s “web page” project to answer it for you.
-Responses that copy and paste what someone else has written about this book online will receive scores of “zero,” AND will be reported to the Dean of Student Services for Academic Dishonesty.
