Rural sociology

During these 8 weeks we should keep in mind that the UN Climate Change Summit is being held jn Scotland Oct 31 -Nov 12. Rural Sociology has much to do with the issues of climate change, namely, the use of land, the production of food, the use of fossil fuels,’ all under the control of corporations. The Corporate Control of food production is one of the main reasons for excessive amounts of greenhouse gases. Corporations, in other words, took over what traditional family farms once did. Small farms have all but disappeared in the U.S. and are struggling to survive in the rest of the world where most of our food is produced. There is a big differene between a farm with a herd of 12 cows and one with 50. Or a chicken farm with a flock of 20 chickens and a large one with hundreds. These are industrialized factory farms. The chickens may never see a day of real sun or touch grass. Large herds of cattle can produced greenhouse gas. So let us for the coming weeks watch what happens at the Climate Change Summit and please complete the following for your assignment 1) In your book STOLEN HARVEST, read Chap 2, “Soy Imperialism.” Then explain what the problem was that caused mustard seed oil to be replaced by soybean oil. This is a story of IMPERIALISTIC domination of one culture over another. Please express your understanding. 2) One of the major transnational corporations that produce agricultural products expecially gmo seed is MONSANTO. What does Vandana Shiva have to say about Monsanto?
