Physician Communication with Patients

by Nicolette Bush (bush36)

Al-Amin, Mona; Makarem, Suzanne C.; Canose, Jeffrey. Assistant professor, Healthcare Administration Department, Sawyer Business School, Suffolk University, Boston, Massachusetts
Assistant professor, Marketing Department, Virginia Commonweath University, Richmond Chief operating officer, Texas Health Resources, Arlington, Texas. Journal of Healthcare Management (J HEALTHC MANAGE), Jan/Feb2016; 61(1): 28-43. (16p)

This article highlights the impact of physician-patient communication and how physician communication not only affects the patients satisfaction, but also the patients health outcome. This articles purpose is to examine patient perception of physician communication in inpatient settings. The article includes a survey to determine patients ratings of physician communication at the hospital level. Information about hospital level factors that can influence physician communication is also collected in the article. The sample consisted of 2,756 hospitals. In the survey they found that many patients complained. The complaints included that physicians did not communicate well, or sometimes not at all. They found that the most complaints included, for-profit ownership, hospital size, and hospitalist providing care in the hospital. The positive surveys were with hospitals who had full time physicians, physician ownership of the hospital, Medicare share of inpatient days, and public ownership. The survey concludes that physician staffing levels affect the quality of communication with patients.

I found this article interesting because I believe that the topic communication with patients is rarely a topic at all, let alone physician communication. I think that it is important that no matter what role one plays in a hospital, the patient should always come first. I like how in the article they conducted a survey of physician communication and patients were able to speak their mind. I think it is terrible that some patients stated that some physicians communicate little, and sometimes do not communicate at all. I think that it makes sense that hospitals with larger amounts of physicians are more involved in communication. I think that for-profit and larger hospitals should invest more in physician communication.

Communication Practices of Managers

by Roselyn Amoah (amoah05)

Joyce, M. S., & Bell, R. L. (2010).COMMUNICATION PRACTICES OF MANAGERS AND THE PREDICTABILITY OF UNCIVIL COMMUNICATION IN RESPONSE. International Journal Of Business & Public Administration, 7(2), 37-51.

This article highlights the impact of uncivil communication between management and employees in an organization. The article addresses how employees are verbally abused by management and how such aggressive communication constitutes violence and what can be done to ensure these practices do not get out of control. Additionally, Joyce and Bell go on to define toxic employees and how they affect the work environment and also offer suggestions to create a civil place for work for all employees regardless of what position they hold in the organization.

This was a great article to read especially since fair management practice is important to me personally. The authors not only did a great job of highlighting the causes and effects of uncivilized communication practices by managers, they also presented many suggestions on how to rectify such a problem including offering trainings on communication, changing management, best practices, etc. The authors also provided an extensive list of legitimate references to support their research.

Mental health assessments of veterans and low rate of care given

by Danielle Krontz (krontz01)

Vogt, D., Fox A., & Leone, B. (2014). Mental Health Beliefs and Their Relationship With Treatment Seeking Among U.S. OEF/OIF Veterans. Journal of Traumatic Stress, 27 (June), 303-313.

This article was directed toward veterans. Its main purpose was to explain how research shows that almost fifty percent of veterans that screen positive for PTSD or depression do not seek help from mental health professionals.  Per the research, this is mainly because there is a stigma among services members that getting treated for a mental health illness is bad and looked down upon. I believe the authors of this article are trying to make veterans aware of the drastic need for mental health diagnosis among veterans. Moreover, the authors are trying to stress the importance of veterans getting help for those mental health illnesses such as PTSD and major depression, regardless of the stigma that proceeds them.
Personally, I can strongly relate to this article and the message is conveying. I was diagnosed with both PTSD and major depression upon returning from Iraq. My family had to push me to get help because I did not want to go to a counselor, just like the other veterans surveyed in this study.  The major strength of this article is that is shows the astounding number of veterans that need to seek help for mental health issues, but decide not to because of the stigma that getting help for these issues makes you weak.  This article opened my eyes to the fact that more of my fellow veterans are dealing with the same kind of issues. This is exactly why I want to go into the counseling field once I receive my degree. I know that there are not enough resources outside of the VA for veterans to utilize and feel safe. Veterans need more resources for help with mental health related concerns so that the numbers found in this article can go down and more veterans get the help they deserve.

by Stacey Hicks (hicks68)

Williamson, W., & Parolin, B. (2012, January). Review of Web-Based Communications for Town Planning in Local Government. Journal of Urban Technology, 19, pp. 43-63.

The intended audience for this article is those who work in local government or are interested in the planning activities of local governments.  The article describes web-based communication for planning in local government.  I was not able to locate a scholarly reviewed article that spoke of communication and fiscal officers.  The purpose of the article compares the types of web-based communication used by local government for planning.  There has been a shift from technical planning models to a more interactive understanding of planning activity.   The article explains how planning activities can be conveyed from the government to the citizen using web-based communication.

The article using supporting citations to educate on governmental web-based communication and explains that planning agencies are considering more interactive applications but, “U.S. planning agencies are not using web-enabled technology to engage the public in discourse, rather they are providing a one-way communication channel in the form of static documents and maps.”  Tables, graphs, monologs and explanations are incorporated also making the article a bit confusing and overloaded on information. The author tends to elaborate making for a lengthy article which may exhaust the interest of the reader.

Good communication skills and good academic results are two very main requirements for a successful worker and communication apprehension (having fear and anxiety when speaking to others) is one very important aspect which leads to a communication gap. The intended audiences for this article are psychologists and researchers who by understanding CA can figure out ways of how people can overcome their fears of CA and effectively communicate, hence becoming successful leaders.  So far through research a negative relationship has been found between CA and quality and quantity communication. A good leadership quality is frequent communication however someone with CA has difficulty in imitating the conversation. The suggested hypothesis states that a negative relation exists between CA and leadership initiative, CA and multicultural appreciation, CA and adaptability in a changing environment and CA and academic performance.

For this study 273 undergraduate students were selected majority of who were business majors and their input was recorded through the help of questionnaires. PRCA-24 was used to know the degree of CA and standard scales were used to get unbiased data results. Results showed that CA had a negative effect on participants’ perceptions of their leadership initiative), multicultural appreciation and adaptability. However, CA did not have a significant relationship with participants’ academic performance.

The strengths of this article include a good literature review, a good action plan for what could be done to overcome CA in students is proposed. The weaknesses of this article include a small sample size and only students with predominant business major were selected. The participants were mainly Caucasian so much generalization cannot be done. Measures were self-reported so could have self-biased results.

The intended audience are public relations specialist who are working in the non-profit sector.  The articles identify the most effective public relations and communications strategies and techniques for the non-profit sector, since their objective is not sales revenue.  Due to the different target audience, public relations specialists must take in consideration in the context sensitive campaigns, which is the main difference in the communication techniques of a profit sector and a non-profit sector.  Public relations specialist need to choose the best strategy, channels of dissemination of the message and proper identification of the target audience’s needs.

Annotated Reference for Evaluating Communication in Health Care

by Kevin Curry (curry18)

Wee Choen, A., Swain, N., & Gale, C. (2013).Evaluating communication in health care: Systematic review and analysis of suitable communication scales. Journal Of Communication In Healthcare, 6(4), 216-222. doi:10.1179/1753807613Y.0000000041

This article is intended for healthcare workers who need to communicate information to all levels of a health organization and determine how to standardize those communications. The article goes on to discuss nine different communications styles and analyzes them into the two most suitable methods for communications within the industry, which included Communication Adaptability Scale and the Interpersonal Communication Competence Scale. Researchers chose these two scales due to readability among all education levels and the ability to be customized to the organizations at hand.

I like this article as it uses research to verify how to improve communications among healthcare facilities and its staff. The healthcare industry has a broad range of education levels, and by conducting this research, we can begin determining a standardized process for disbursing information in a quick and uniform way to better improve communications between staff and patients. Communication is the one biggest asset to a large healthcare organization, and as the industry continues to grow, an organization needs to understand how to streamline the process to serve its growing needs better.

The Corporate Insurance Manager and Employee Benefits

by Simonetta Poku-Yeboah (pokuye02)

Ivry, D. A. (1966). THE CORPORATE INSURANCE MANAGER AND EMPLOYEE BENEFIT PLANS. Journal Of Risk & Insurance, 33(1), 1-17.

This article is intended for professors, directors, and insurance managers. Also anybody just interested in the specific field of study. This article involves administrating of employee benefit plans by insurance managers to expand insurance departments. He states that the department lacks good performance. The personnel department handles routine aspects of claims on a daily basis. It also listed responsibilities given to insurance managers by their companies. They are to act as expert consultant in the field of pensions, group insurance and other employee benefits. They are also responsible for the design and interpretation of employee benefit and pension plans. The reason why this was important is because in most companies, the insurance manager has either nothing or little to do with decisions regarding benefits. The main key in  this study was the involvement of insurance mangers in employee benefit plans. Whether or not they should be involved with reasons backing it up.

I liked this article because it went into depth about the status of insurance managers and who they reported to as well. It was a study based on insurance managers involved in the employee benefit plans. It was interesting to me to discover that majority of the insurance managers are involved in every benefit plan except pensions. The overall context of this article was informative and brought insight on responsibilities that an insurance manger holds. It also elaborated on the reasons why insurance managers should be involved in playing a role in employee benefit plans.

Annotated Reference on College Students’ Transition into the Financial Planning

by Ryan Mink (mink03)

Goetz, J. W., Tombs, J. W., & Hampton, V. L. (2005).Easing College Students’ Transition into the Financial Planning Profession. Financial Services Review, 14(3), 231-251.

This article is intended for educators, facilitators, and students inquiring about the insights in financial planning education. The article discusses how the traditional models of financial planning aren’t efficient enough. The way educational programs in financial planning are currently being administrated are outdated, and can be a burden to the student and the future employers within the financial services industry. He mentions how educational environments of financial planning should bring in professional experience and teaching techniques to help with the transition from studying financial planning to working in the field of financial planning. He discusses how the current traditional model of school, transition, and profession are merging enough for there to be an easy transition for students. The model that he proposes shows how the transition between school and the profession can be more blended.

I thought the overall context of the article was good. He brought up some very interesting points on how the education in financial planning need to transition to something that was more realistic for the student. One of the strengths of this article was explaining the techniques to making the educational program more practical for students. The detail encompassed with the advanced training outside of the educational degree is also a strength that is mentioned. The reason why I think it is beneficial is because it shows why the educational curriculum techniques could be better in a profession that has several advanced certifications that is prominent in the industry. I thought one of the weaknesses was not elaborating on why more employers aren’t being more marketed more for students. There seem to be a limited amount of internships and HR personnel available for the profession. The details in how it can be better for the students and employers within this article is good information that should be utilized in the future.

Annotated Reference for strategic financial communication

by Christopher Guisinger (guisin04)

Dulek, R, Campbell, K. (2015, January), On The Dark Side of Strategic Communication, International Journal of Business Communication Vol 52. p122-142

This article is written to explain to the reader the different types of communication that are used in coming up with different strategies for shaping a company and planning the actions of the company so that it can be successful. Strategic intent is one of the main points of the article in trying to explain how a company needs to have a clear and precise description of what the company hopes to do and the best way to go about doing this. As well as explaining how strategy, especially in business, is extremely competitive in nature and you must communicate analysis of your competitors. The article also explains how it is important to avoid ambiguity within the company to ensure that statements are conceived in the wrong way.

I thought this article did a great job of explaining to the reader how important communication is as part of an overall strategy. The authors pointed out the different types of communication that are needed to have a successful strategy and explained ways that it can be deceptive within itself if proper grammar and English are not executed. The article explains how important the interpretation of different message can vastly effect the company and whether it continues to move in the right direction or continues to sputter.

Annotated reference on 4 reasons your internal communications lack engagement

by Rex Keihl (keihl01)

DesRochers, M. (2016, November). 4 Reasons your internal communication efforts aren’t engaging your employees. Communication World, doi: 07447612

This article is intended to point out 4 key reasons a corporation’s internal communication issued by the human relations (HR) departments, may not be effectively engaging employees as they could be. As managing director of PoliteMail Software Company, Michael DesRochers has a sole purpose to assist companies to not only measure, but improve their communication efforts. In this article he points out 4 reasons in existing communications that are causing this lack of effectiveness. He goes onto making a few suggestions that involve properly polling the target audience with measurable data that can be evaluated and used to provide some insight for creating an effective means of communication that will engage the employees.

I thought this article was a bit weak in content. The article was also somewhat accusatory in the way it assumes the existing communications by the reader are lacking focus and poling questions causing a missed mark of effectiveness. The purpose of his article is to cast doubt in his reader’s mind hoping they will reach out to him for help. This indicates a sales pitch being disguised as an expert opinion, but then again it does make accurate observations from his experience.

Sample Annotated Reference

by Jane Campanizzi-Mook (campanim)

Culbert.S. A. (February 18, 2015), Get rid of the performance review, The Chicago Tribune, retrieved from: http://www.chicagotribune.com

This article focuses on the employee performance review system that is prevelant in the corporate world. Culbert expresses his thoughts on the performance review, and how he sees it as a counterproductive way of managing employees. He claims that employee will hold back their true feelings in fear of any backlash that may come when it’s time for an annual review; He also says that it allows bosses to intimidate employees. Culbert goes on to give an alternative solution to  the problem with a performance PREview system that does not point any blame for past events, but instead will be a system that looks at how to tackle future operations.

I thought this was a pretty good article. Culbert successively pointed out everything that he felt to be wrong with the performance review system, and he applied the proper logic and statistics to help readers get a better understanding of the problem. Not only that, but he offered an alternative that may be better fit for employee management. This article touches on a popular topic as many people have oppossing thoughts on the employee review, and Culbert makes it clear where he stands on the issue.
