Chapter 3:  Communication and Culture

Rebeca Hwang has spent a lifetime juggling identities — Korean heritage, Argentinian upbringing, education in the United States — and for a long time she had difficulty finding a place in the world to call home. Yet along with these challenges came a pivotal realization: that a diverse background is a distinct advantage in today’s globalized world. In this personal talk, Hwang reveals the endless benefits of embracing our complex identities — and shares her hopes for creating a world where identities aren’t used to alienate but to bring people together instead.

PLEASE CHOOSE ONE OPTION AND DO.

Culture: There are two options for this Discussion Post.

Option #1- Practice thinking mindfully to overcome prejudiced assumptions that influence communication. Recall Yasmin Abdel-Magied (TedTalk speaker featured in module 2). Speculate how someone inclined toward ethnocentrism, prejudice, and stereotypical assumptions might regard Ms. Abdel-Magied. What means might they use to get to know her as a unique individual instead?

Option #2- Did you find a recent article in the news or have experience in or outside of work that is relevant to class regarding our conversation on communication and culture? How does the news story or event connect to or challenge course content?  In what ways do you think differently about this dimension of culture? Post or link the (credible and authoritative) news story here. Please do not post from blogs or other non-authoritative sources).
