Drawing the line between child abuse and correction

As a parent, one has to make various decisions to benefit their family. I am a father and have encountered diverse challenges throughout my parenting journey. One of the challenges that I have faced requiring advanced decision-making is differentiating child correction when wrong and abuse. This topic has been in various journals and news articles, creating a heated debate on the best approaches to implement to avoid maltreatment of children. My biggest issue was determining the difference between child abuse and normal punishment to trigger behavioral change through spanking.

The decision-making process was complex because I had to gather research articles and learn about my state’s regulations about punishing children for the wrongs they did. Further, the decision was complicated by the spiritual guidance offered through the bible, which encourages parents to guide their children. Therefore, my first step was to determine the potential benefits and drawbacks associated with my decision to spank my children when they are wrong (Criss et al.). This process informed my decision by providing two-sided arguments. While the supporting arguments claimed that spanking is necessary while triggers behavioral change, it should not lead to child abuse.

My ultimate decision was informed by research on child abuse and parenting. I learned that parents are essential players in a child’s life. However, their interactions concerning correction should not lead to abuse. However, determining the limit for spanking in the home and schooling settings is challenging for the parents and teachers (Bi and Keller). Therefore, while spanking is essential, parents and other stakeholders must understand the limits defining child abuse. This insight offered a framework for approaching the corrections and punishment decisions made in home and school environments. I concluded that spanking is one of the punishments that can invoke behavioral change and correction. Regardless, misusing this punishment may adversely affect the children leading to abuse which is punishable by law.

Savannah,

Avoid bold always in Eng 112, even for titles.

Original Instructions for Reference:

Brainstorm a few decisions that you have made over the past few months or some time in your recent past. Consider the decision making process, the measuring of pros and cons and any particular moments or thoughts that helped you make this decision. This issue and your decision should be the subject of Journal #1. Repeat: journal #1 should be an essay, 300-500 words long as all journal entries will be, about a decision you had to make for your own good.

Considering the importance of MLA research documentation, the decision you make should be on an issue of importance to more than just you. It can be researched. It can be taken out of the context of your life and applied to other people in similar situations. This is where research and MLA research documentation enters.

For example, I am a father who deliberated spanking as a parent. To make a long story short, I decided to spank, but only on the condition that spanking a child would lead to a situation when spanking would no longer be necessary. The larger issue is punishment and child abuse and where people draw the line, including the spanking of children by teachers and school principals. So some of my journal #1 would be about my family while research would also be included on the subject/issue/debate of spanking and child abuse and anything that can be connected to it.

January 2021 UPDATE: “Please Read for All Journals” has been updated and has another essay ending it. Please check that Word document to see, among other things, the required use of parentheses to cite a source, as well as the particular keywords in those parentheses. The Journal #1 discussed in the video and the new Journal #1 in “Please Read for All Journals” both have to contain parentheses to cite sources in order to be correct Eng 112 essays.

Consult the Short Folder. Always consult the Short Folder. You will not be successful in this class – including journal #1 – without paying strict attention to The Short Folder.

Along with the 300-500 word count, 2-4 sources is the normal requirement for journal entries.
