Summary Practice

Here is the summary we wrote together in class on Oct. 4 for the guided practice exercise:

In the article “Three Reasons Why Millennials are Ditching Diamonds,” Emmie Martin says that the younger generation is buying fewer diamonds than in the past. The first reason is that they’re getting married later and more of them are staying single than in past generations. Second, instead of diamonds, they want stones that are different and individual, not what the diamond industry says they should want. They also care about getting a good value and not hurting the environment. Finally, Martin writes that Millennials care about different things than previous generations. They would rather spend money on experiences than on expensive diamond rings, and they don’t care if they have traditional stones because times have changed and the model of marriage has changed too. Thus, given these three reasons, it makes sense that Millennials have changed their buying habits when it comes to diamonds.

Tips for writing your midterm summary:

1) Read carefully and take notes before you start writing! Use your SQ3R skills to help you focus.

2) Make sure you write one paragraph with no more than 10 sentences.

3) Make sure you start your summary with a main idea sentence (author, title, main idea).

3) Have clear transitions. At least once, mention the author again to remind readers that you’re summarizing (Martin also says…)

4) Use your own words!

5) Proofread before you submit your work.

Tips for using Respondus Lockdown Browser:

1) Make sure you close all other programs, browsers, and windows first…THEN click on the Lockdown Browser and go log into MyNOVA and Canvas.

2) Remember that you can’t leave the test window while writing your summary. No other programs, no other web sites. That includes things like Word, Google Docs, and online dictionaries (using a print dictionary is fine).

3) You can try out the Lockdown Browser first to make sure it’s working. There’s a practice exercise in Module 0 next to the download link. Try it anytime.
