Executive Summary

Provide a summary (250 words minimum) of this lab, which includes only the key points of your procedure, analyses and conclusions.

What were the major steps in your data collection?

Include any problems encountered during your lab that compromised the data collection.

What were the results once you analyzed your data?

You must include specific data and results as part of this executive summary.

What are your major conclusions?

Spend some extra time to organize and edit the information you wish to leave with your freshman reader. The executive summary should be written last. Use MS Word’s “Word Count” tool and include your word count at the end of your Executive Summary.

Introduction

What were the goals of the lab?

Give some introductory material on headloss due to pipe fittings to familiarize your reader with the topic.

5

Procedure/

Equipment

Briefly provide a list or paragraph of the steps performed during the lab.

Analysis/

Results

Prepare an Excel table for each set of your results. Sample calculations for each equation should be handwritten (or typed) and included in the Appendix. Don’t forget your units! Also, please label all tables, figures and/or charts!

Calculations and Analysis of Data:

Calculate velocity, v, for all trials using Eqn. ___.

Calculate the velocity head, hv, for all trials using

Calculate and tabulate the headlosses of the various trials using Eqn. ___

Calculate KExperimental

Graphs of Data

Plot a graph of Δh vs. hv for all the pipe fittings.

Plot a graph of Q vs. K for 90° Short Radius Bend and 90° Long Radius Bend fittings. Use a linear regression line and discuss about the slope of the line by comparing it to the theoretical facts you know about K.

Attach the original data sheet from your lab. Be sure that all work is shown including formulas and units of measurements.

Discussion

Explain the results of your graph. Talk about the accuracy of your regression equation based on the value you get for R2. What relationship do they establish?

What is the difference between major and minor losses? Why is it important to know the major and minor losses of different pipes and pipe fittings?

List two applications where either of the pipe fittings you saw in the lab are used in the “real world.” Include a reference for your sources.

What sources of error did you encounter in the lab and what magnitude of effect did it have on the results?

30

Conclusion

Briefly summarize the highlights of the lab and discuss their significance in the real world

Were you able to meet the objectives of the lab? What did you learn from conducting this lab?

Give at least one recommendation to improve the accuracy of this lab.
