The feedback from my supervisor
I have updated the details on Grade Centre to show that I am your supervisor.
There are several problems with this specification:
In the aim, you state that the batteries will be able to store energy and only supply heat when needed. This is incorrect because the battery supplies electrical energy. This is converted into heat by some form of heater, such as a simple electrical heater (fan heater, radiator, etc) or by a heat pump. The heat pump has the advantage of being able to increase the heat delivered for the same electrical input, compared to a resistive heater.
You have too many objectives and they are too ambitious. For example, you will not be able to investigate the application and management of solar PV as well as investigating combinations of heat pump and gas heating, as well as looking at enhanced energy awareness.
Your objectives should contribute to meeting your aim, so I suggest that they are something like:
Investigate the heat requirements of a typical UK home
Identify the optional heating systems to delivering domestic heat using electricity (probably direct electric heaters, storage heaters or using a heat pump)
Investigate the costs of using each system identified above and how these costs are affected by using different ‘time of use’ tariffs, such as Economy 7
Investigate the use of battery electricity storage to reduce the cost of operating the heating systems identified above by time-shifting electricity use to benefit from cheaper tariffs.
You might be able to model this using a computer simulation, but I think it would be safer to use a simple spreadsheet to start with and see how that goes.
You do not need to explain how batteries or heat pumps work in detail, or get into battery chemistry. Instead consider this as an energy systems project. You don’t need to compare Tesla Powerwall 1 with Powerwall 2. This type of detail is not relevant. You just need the costs, capacities and power outputs of typical battery systems.
You will not be sourcing or installing equipment, and you will not be measuring data on real heating systems. This will be a modelling project using a spreadsheet or perhaps computer tool such as Polysun. Don’t include irrelevant references such as Akram et al (2020). You only need 2 or three refs for this document, but they should be very well focused on the central question.
