WHAT: The Group Analysis is an individual assignment that demonstrates your ability to apply specific theories and concepts to a social service-related group. Assignments submitted analyzing groups that are not related to social services will not be accepted for credit. If in doubt, please check to make sure your group is appropriate for this assignment. Specifically, the Group Analysis will reflect your knowledge of accurately identifying, applying, integrating, interpreting, and assessing theoretical concepts, assumptions, and group behavior. It will also assess your ability to utilize practice-informed research as substantiated by available literature.

HOW: All analyses are to be submitted through blackboard. You can find the submission link by going to the tab labeled “weekly modules.” After initial submission, check your My Grades tabs for a yellow icon indicating the initial submission was good and is ready for grading. Click on your submission to view the written text ensuring what you submitted was properly uploaded with a Blackboard approved file–.doc or .docx (i.e. Mac files— pages–do not properly show in Blackboard and blank submissions will be considered late).

INSTRUCTIONS: For this assignment, you are required to use chapters 3 and 4 from your textbook. Use the template below: Group Analysis: “Place the name of your group here”

A. Introduction/Background Information 1. Report all demographic information: Group composition, ages, gender, number of participants, [SOCW 347/ Spring, 2022 Last Revised January 13, 2022 – 13 – ethnicities, location, etc. 2. Briefly discuss the purpose of the group, its overall intentions and any issues of importance.

B. Type of Group

1. Discuss whether your group is a task group or treatment group.

a. Provide a definition for the type of group you identified.

b. Explain why your group fits with this type of group.

2. Further specify your group type (choose a or b)

a. If your group is a task group:

i. Determine which of the following specific types of task groups best describes your group: Team, treatment conference, staff development group, administrative group, committee, board of directors, delegate council, or social action

ii. Give a definition for the specific type of task group you indicated in (i.)

iii. Discuss why you believe your group aligns with this type of task group.

b. If your group is a treatment group:

i. Determine which of the following specific types of treatment groups best describe your group: Therapy group, support group, educational group, growth group or socialization group.

C. Conceptual Framework

1. Explain how systems theory can be beneficial to understanding your group:

a. Give an overview of systems theory and explain how it would apply to your group

b. Define the concept of boundary i. How is the boundary determined in your group (e.g. what are the eligibility requirements to be a member?)

c. Define the concept of integration i. How does your group achieve integration? Provide an example.

d. Define the concept of pattern maintenance i. How does your group achieve pattern maintenance? Provide an example.

e. Define the concept of goal attainment i. What is the goal of your group? How do they attain this goal? Provide an example.

f. Define the concept of adaptation i. What are the environmental changes to which your group must adapt? How does your group adapt to these changes?
