Last semester we talked about how to prepare in case of a large-scale emergency. None of us could have even imaged that we would experience the Corona Virus just months later! For this discussion post, please provide examples of how you feel your community was either ready or unprepared for this large-scale pandemic. What do you think is working well and what seems to be system wide failures? As healthcare workers, we practice protocols and prepare for these types of events, but do you feel protocols and policies failed or worked? How so? What do you feel could have been handled differently, if anything at all.
This week in lecture we talked about some important aspects of ethics. We discussed that some things may be legal even though they are unethical. (ex. hydraulic fracturing in oil drilling causes pollution, selling products with known carcinogens to the public. We also reviewed a case study and completed the form to make an ethical decision. For this discussion post there are two parts. Write one paragraph describing another example of a legal but unethical practice in our country. Pick one of the Abortion cases studies that are posted and write two paragraphs (using the form) on why you agree or disagree with the case study.
You should have a total of three paragraphs in your original post.
For this week’s discussion post, select one of the two case studies presented on the Ethics of withholding life sustaining treatment. These are both high profile cases that have received substantial attention over the past several years. When you read the case studies, think about the following things: who has rights to the patient’s medical care? Who should or should not have the right to decide? What quality of life do you feel the patient has? Does it matter to you if the patient may be suffering from their illness/disease? Write 2 paragraphs examining the different stakeholder in the case. Come to a conclusion if you agree or disagree with removing treatment and why.
Select one of the following case studies. Identify your initial gut reaction to the case. Identify the stakeholders. Remember to include others than just the patient and their family. Analyze how you think they may feel. Include if you feel that you have any biases that you have identified. Then state your final feelings regarding the case study and least 2 paragraphs.
