HIST 1301 Research Paper How-To

For this class you will need to complete a paper assignment that is 20% of your grade.

While any history related database can have the information you need if you aren’t sure which one to use I recommend JSTOR or Academic Search Complete.

Style: The paper must be cited in the MLA style. MLA uses in-text citations with an (author, pg#) format.

George Washington was the first president of the United States. (Hunter, 23)

You will need two citation types throughout your paper. The first will be in-text citations like the example above. The second type will be on your Works Cited page at the end of your paper. If you are not sure how to cite a source in MLA you can visit…

Sources: For this assignment you are required to use AT LEAST one primary and one secondary source. However, I highly recommend aiming for more. Part of the assignment is demonstrating you can examine the multiple points of views covering an issue. The more sources you have the better the assignment will be.

Primary Sources are documents or objects created at the time under study. So if your paper was over George Washington a primary source would be something like a speech he gave or something someone who knew him personally wrote about.

Secondary Sources are things like scholarly articles or research papers that use primary sources. The articles in the online database are Secondary Sources.

Grading Rubric: The Grading Rubric will be attached to the assignment itself so you can see how I will grade it.

SafeAssign: You will submit the paper over Blackboard using SafeAssign. You MUST attach your file and check the SafeAssign box to submit your file.

Please submit your file as a docx file. Blackboard has issues with pdf files and cannot read PAGES files.
