Portfolio Project Part 1: Delta Air Lines, Inc.

Introduction

Delta Air Lines, Inc was started in 1928 as an aerial crop dusting company in Macon, Ga called Huff Daland Dusters Inc (Delta, 2022). “In 1928, the company was purchased by C. E. Woolman and renamed Delta Air Service, and a year later made its first passenger flight (Delta, 2022). Today Delta is an industry leader, “operating in over 300 destinations in 60 different countries” (Delta, 2022). The CEO, Ed Bastain, has led the company through some challenging economic times, but has always promoted the values and mission of the company. During his tenure, Delta has become the world’s most honored airlines, having received prestigious awards and industry accolades domestically and worldwide. Additionally, navigating the pandemic, while making remarkable strides to recover and keep passengers safe has not only solidified Delta’s reputation as one of the most reliable airlines, but has also helped boost their global presence and passenger experience.

Globalization in the Three Countries

Canada, China, and Italy are three of the most important nations in which Delta Airlines, Inc. operates. All three nations are signatories to the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and the World Trade Organization. I think that all three countries actively adhere to the criteria established by these three international organizations. Canada and Italy are two countries that do not get much attention in this respect. On the other hand, China, on the other hand, has come under fire, with IMF, as per Dollar (2020), claiming that the country has been hesitant to shoulder the duties that other industrialized countries shoulder in the global arena. In all other respects, according to these standards, the nation has been a contributing and responsible member.

Each of the three nations contributes to globalization via the structure of their own governments. The countries in question all have an active legal system that provides for the fair treatment of cases in all circumstances. In a similar vein, all three countries have policies that encourage foreign travel and commerce. Furthermore, they have established infrastructure and government bodies to monitor these activities and guarantee that they adhere to approved norms. However, there have been some reservations regarding the Chinese government’s openness and accountability. According to Lohman and Rhee (2021), the Chinese government is very protective of its citizens. For example, they assigned it a 4 out of 10 rating for its energy and environmental transparency, a 1 out of 10 rating for its human rights concerns, a 3 out of 10 rating for its influence activities, and a 3 out of 10 rating for its overseas investments. This lessened transparency may have a negative impact on international relations in the future. However, via commerce and investment, the nation has maintained excellent connections with a large number of countries throughout the globe. In comparison, Italy and Canada rank well in the world, ranking 20th and 2nd, respectively (U.S. News & World Report, n.d.), making them some of the highest-ranking countries in terms of transparency.

Following the recognition of the importance of globalization in economic progress around the globe, the three nations have enacted rules to guarantee that international activities function as efficiently as possible. One measure that stands out in all three countries is the focus placed on combating corruption. The administrations of all three nations are of the opinion that both have rigorous policies in this regard. For example, Canada’s Corruption of Foreign Public Officials Act forbids the payment of bribes to foreign public officials while conducting international affairs. Corruption, on the other hand, is seen as a major criminal violation in China, regardless of its degree. Laws prohibiting such behavior, particularly when dealing with state-owned resources, serve to foster legal commerce. Last but not least, Italy has strict regulations in place to combat corruption and money laundering. As per Pisano (2021), Article 748 bis of the International Criminal Court punishes offenders with jail sentences of up to 12 years. The efforts of the three nations are reflected in their relatively high corruption perception scores, which is indicative of their success (Transparency International, 2020).

While Canada ranked 11th with 77 points and China ranked 78th with a score of 42 points (Transparency International, 2022). Notably, China has made tremendous strides forward in this rating of overall performance. In addition, the three nations demonstrate the importance of good governance as a strategy for promoting globalization. Consequently, they have more favorable foreign trade policies and stimulate domestic commercial activity in order to foster economic progress and wealth creation. The government also provides advantageous property rights to its residents, emphasizing the right to ownership and usage, so long as one complies with societal morals or accepts an acceptable reward for one’s efforts. Foreigners, on the other hand, are subject to harsher regulations, with each individual allowed to possess just one residential property. Italy and Canada, on the other hand, have no limits on who may hold these assets, although they highlight the need to thoroughly verify non-residents before purchasing these assets.

When it comes to the real estate business, China’s restrictions may have the ability to stifle globalization. They also use rules that help to maintain a competitive marketplace. In all cases, the government forbids action that would serve to limit competition in the marketplace. Examples include China’s Anti-Monopoly Law, which was enacted to avoid an unhealthy concentration of power in the country. Delta Air Lines, Inc. is a company established in the United States that specializes in the production of different services for the aviation business. They include services for the movement of products, people, and pets to and from various locations across the globe.

Conclusion

To conclude, it is impossible to overstate the significance of the China-Canada connection to the Canadian economy and society. As a result, Canada finds itself between two rock formations. The Liberal government’s efforts to improve ties with China are hampered by domestic politics and pressure from the United States. However, if Canada is unable to get access to the Chinese market, its economic troubles might deteriorate further. Articles in the Chinese official media, on the other hand, often assert that China is attempting to establish “a community of shared destiny for all mankind,” according to the author. Nevertheless, the version of “globalization with Chinese features” that is now taking shape in Italy is one that no nation wants to be a part of.
