Activity 2 ) Noll Ch. 7

WHAT –

Analyze Luther’s significant theological, ministerial, leadership, social and literary contributions that gave rise to the Protestant movement.

WHY –

Luther’s own personal journey and struggle actually served as the impetus for his Biblical study and doctrinal discoveries.  There may also be a sense in which our pain and struggle can serve as the vehicle or motivation for our deliverance as well as the freedom of others.

Identify at least two of Luther’s key theological statements concerning salvation.  How does his foundational theological statement serve as a source of hope for his personal private struggle?  What are the grounds for his theological statement?  In order words, what authority does he rely on and why does this go against the grain of church leadership, authority, and tradition?  What was it about Luther’s primary claim that was so revolutionary?(one page)

REPLY:  Respond to your own post from the perspective of a German citizen in the 1500s.  How might this proposal come across as good news?  From the perspective of a Catholic church leader in Rome, how might Luther’s proposal come across as disruptive, unwelcomed, or problematic?(one page)

Activity 3) Noll Ch. 8: Post 250 words

WHAT –

Relate the economic, technological, political, religious, and social climate of the Protestant era to the rise of Protestantism.

WHY –

It is also the case that Luther is a product of the times and a particular economic, political, religious, cultural, nationalistic, linguistic, and technological developments.  Luther found himself in a “for such a time as this” moment where he could do no other but take a stand.   We may find ourselves in similar times.

POST: Think about the developments during the time of Martin Luther as well as the English Act of Parliament of 1534.  Describe the role of nationalism, culture, language, conflicts of interests, Renassaince, economy, and technology in the advancement of Protestantism.  Explain the impact of at least three factors in your response while using at least three substantial quotes from the textbook.
