Many organizations offering human services are non-profit, which results in them facing many issues (CU Chicago, 2022). For this project, I will use the Second Chance Program as my data source. The organization that will feature in my course project is the Second Chance Program located in Riverbend City. The focus and issue to explore for this project is youth dropout rates in the Riverbend City. The target of the organization when it was officially started in 2000 was adults, and it aims to help them get a second chance to be part of society. The organization was expanded in 2005 to accommodate the younger population by collaborating with the Juvenile Justice System and RBC police. It also began working with the region’s School District, which had implemented zero-tolerance policies concerning school violations such as using drugs and having weapons in school. This led to the rise in the number of students dropping out of school or facing expulsions, and at the same time, reports of juvenile offenders rose. Second Chance Program saw a need to lower the transfer of young people from school to jail and acted by providing programs for juvenile offenders who were not involved in violent offenses as a way of keeping them in school and out of prison. After consistently offering programming to youths for many years, the organization’s success is evident since the number of youths going to jail in the area has reduced. The program has not stopped at offering second chances since, in 2008, it began offering First Chance programs to students in RBC. The programs cover anger management, offer character development, and provide counseling to those taking it to keep more students in school.
