Abstract

Global communication is an element that continues to grow mainly due to technological advancements in most parts of the world. The development and transfer of information either non-verbally or verbally, especially in international contexts and settings, is global communication. Through globalization, there has been an opportunity to overcome physical and geographical distance to encourage interconnection. Global communication enhances the strategies necessary to influence instant communication, thereby reducing space and time. Global communication represents a process of promoting production, financing, and trading around the world. Today, global communication impacts the social, cultural, economic, and political fields. Through the availability of information technologies, there is a high probability of creating a global village. Factors such as access to satellite communication, the internet, and international media allow the growth of global communication. The implications of the continuous development of global communication today are vast and diverse. For instance, global communication impacts the economic sector by promoting the exchange of products across borders. Global communication also enhances connection in most marginalized areas irrespective of culture, social, or political barriers. Through global communication, individuals can overcome imbalances, thereby ensuring positive growth within the community.

Global Communication

In the current age of the internet, satellite communication, and connection around the world, it is a fact that global communication exists in most parts of the world. Global communication is a concept as old as humanity since people live in communities that exchange products and information for decades (Ergashev & Farxodjonova, 2020). The idea involves the transfer of information in the international context and setting. Nevertheless, the current concept of global communication is primarily due to the advancement in technologies. Today, global communication grows depending on the level of information and communication technologies (ICTs). According to research, the development of global communication is also enhanced by the first and second world wars (Winseck, 2017). The connection during the war evolved through telephones, telegraphs, submarine cables in the United States and Europe, and the development of railroads. Other factors such as radio commercialization in the United States and the growth of films in the country enhanced the development of global communication. Over the last few decades, there has been a sudden rise in international news agencies worldwide, promoting global communication (Winseck, 2017). The growth of international conferences, education, seminars, tourism, the internet, and exchange students encourage the idea of global communication. Global communication remains a continuous process of evolution that affects businesses, individuals, and relationships between nations globally.

Currently, humanity thrives in a world where globalization and the media encourage interaction and communication using advanced networks. Globalization enables the change in physical distance and geography of places to influence interconnection. Research indicates that globalization is more of a process that enhances production, economies, and trading (Winseck, 2017). Global communication is highly conceptualized in cultural, political, and economic globalization. Although globalization signifies the availability of data in every part of the world, factors such as economics and socialization result in an imbalance in the distribution of information (Ergashev & Farxodjonova, 2020). The world is slowly becoming a global village due to cultural spread and homogenization globally. However, the ideology of a global village is farfetched since inequalities exist in distributing information, telecommunication, and technologies.

As world competition continues to intensify, the need to evaluate national competitiveness attracts attention within national and firm economies. Business managers must have adequate data on the relative competitiveness of specific locations for the business, especially in firms with dispersed activities (Bilan et al., 2019). On the other hand, policymakers must understand the competitive nature of the environment to make effective decisions that positively impact the business.

Economically, global communication plays a critical role in enhancing liberalization and internationalization of economic activities. The rapid growth of ICT eliminates temporal disparities and geographical boundaries for capital flow, globalization, and other essential economic activities (Bilan et al., 2019). There has also been a sudden rise in virtual markets or a global transborder due to international communication. The development of global communication connections enables the growth of transnational corporations that continue to operate worldwide (Hamelink, 2019). For example, Netflix is one of the companies that continue to use virtually primarily due to the growth in global communications. Transactions in emerging markets around the globe are also dependent on the flow of data through modern technologies. Therefore, information is part of the world, an essential commodity to promoting economic activities through modern ICTs.

Socially, the interrelation in global communication networks influences the realization of a global village, especially with global consciousness, cooperation between nongovernmental bodies such as women’s rights, environmental activists, human rights, and interconnection of the world (Ergashev & Farxodjonova, 2020). Currently, there are no barriers to socialization in most parts of the earth due to democracy. The elimination of restrictions on localities enhances interactions, primarily through the availability of ICTs to maintain social ties regardless of the time or space.

From a political perspective, global communication is influencing the sovereignty, authority, and legitimacy of the country and affects international relations (Hamelink, 2019). State and national borders are increasingly becoming porous since the globalization of technology makes it challenging for governments to control or regulate the flow of data and communication across the border. For example, national borders are becoming insignificant as people continue to operate and transact over the internet. Due to such developments, global communication challenges the legitimacy and authority of nations across the world (Hamelink, 2019). Global communication is advantageous in empowering forgotten and marginalized individuals in the international arena, thereby undermining the authority of state-national boundaries. The diverse forms of global communication are responsible for developing moral voids for the exploration of alternative communities.

According to research, there have been changes in the understanding of international relations due to global communication (Hamelink, 2019). Modern technologies enhance the movement of information, science, ideologies, and technologies to the peripheries of power. Global communication is undermining and promoting foreign relations through democracy. The continuous emergence and growth of civil groups globally, nongovernmental bodies, transnational media corporations, and intergovernmental organizations complicate the context of diplomacy and international relations (Hamelink, 2019). Multinational corporations are drastically transforming trade relations, economic infrastructures, political and internal relationships between countries, impacting national security, terrorism, and capacity to gather intelligence. Another complicating factor is the revitalization and resurgence of ethnicities resulting in the growth of international politics of the need for recognition (Ergashev & Farxodjonova, 2020). The media industry is also responsible for the emergence of propaganda and diplomacy as essential elements in international relations. Therefore, global communication is increasingly transforming the nature of soft and hard power in international relations.

In terms of culture, the emerging nature of global communication is developing new global consumer culture with worldwide entertainment and advertising firms. According to research, the changes in human dimensions in terms of politics, economic, and social environments due to global communication have resulted in advanced interaction between cultures worldwide (Ergashev & Farxodjonova, 2020). As a result of transformations brought about by international communication, there has been improvement in handling problems linked to intercultural communication.

Nevertheless, the most critical impact of global communication is the blurring of technological, political, cultural, social, and economic boundaries globally. Traditional media such as radio and televisions and the current ICTs such as computers are cooperating to become the global digital communication networks (Bilan et al., 2019). Different firms dealing with contemporary and traditional media collaborate through alliances and mergers to create a new multimedia sector in the economic fields. Global communication is the single factor that promotes globalization and other developments such as regionalism and nationalism.

Human resource professionals and managers must communicate effectively with the workers irrespective of the geographical location. However, communicating with people in different countries can be challenging since face-to-face communication is one of the best strategies for spreading information. Today, most international corporations rely on skype to reach employees working in different countries (Hsu & Beasley, 2019). Although video conferencing can be an effective way of communicating, most business leaders use texting options to influence employee confidence. On the other hand, language barriers prevent the use of video function while communicating internationally unless with the availability of a translator. Corporate communicators should consider the audience and environment to select the most effective method.

The change in times and technology is also a disadvantage in terms of security. Human society is currently under the threat of chemical, organized crime, and biological warfare enhanced by global communication (Hamelink, 2019). The interaction also threatens the environment in decreasing biodiversity, climate change, and the continuous disappearance of the forests worldwide due to global demand for resources (Diffenbaugh & Burke, 2019). Other negative factors resulting from global communication include racial, religious, and ethnic differences resulting in violence. Understanding the differences is key to enhancing harmony within the world, thereby promoting economic success.

For centuries, globalization has been occurring since people have been interacting and exchanging ideologies and products in the past. Currently, the growth of technology and information sources promotes the interconnection around the world through global communication. The interconnection allows people from different parts of the world to experience other cultures and understand the economies of certain countries. Due to the continuous growth of ICTs, there is a possibility of creating a global village where one can share resources, especially marginalized individuals. Global communication has been crucial in eliminating social, political, economic, and cultural barriers that limit interaction between people. Blurring boundaries encourages growth as corporations, organizations, and other industries can benefit from the interconnectivity. However, developing highly effective communication trends worldwide is essential in promoting growth and equality around the world.
