For this assignment these are the details on what is required but you have to read the attached documents.
Based on the article and the explanation offered in the lecture, we now know that emphasizing scientific consensus within climate change discussions is an experimentally valid strategy to elicit higher-order beliefs for climate action. As such, developing belief in the consensus is a “gateway” belief toward other, higher-order beliefs.
That’s the straightforward part: now comes the challenge for us as communication scholars. Based on the discussion of the “six Americas” offered in the lecture, each group will devise “stump speeches” or short communication blurbs that could be used in policy briefs, op-eds, letters to politicians, etc. The content of each stump speech would communicate Linden et al’s experimental findings on the consensus among climate scientists about the anthropogenic basis of climate change. In other words, you are tasked with developing the language that would be most likely to appeal to each one of the “six Americas” discussed in the lecture.
I will be looking for three primary aspects here: a) an identification of the key characteristics of each one of the “six America” personas, b) how artfully and/or deftly you incorporate specific findings from Linden et al within the blurb, and c)whether you can incorporate any conceptual help from the ideological spectrum that we explored last week.
I anticipate each “stump speech” to be between 100-150 words, and for six such speeches, that brings the total word count in the range of 600-900 words. Word counts are not going to be used as a grading standard, and parsimony is appreciated here. So if you can make your case in 100 words each, more power to you. The usual rubric will be used for grading.
For the second part you have to read the attached documents and answer these 5 questions
