Independent and Dependent Variables Made Easy!!

Task: Now that you have reviewed the information above, describe an example of how you use the scientific method in your daily life. Which observation(s) lead you to use the scientific method? State a good hypothesis, how you will test the hypothesis (i.e., the experiment), results and conclusion. What are the control and treatment groups in your experiment? What are the dependent and independent variables in your experiment? Name at least one controlled variable.

You can use a simple example, or you can go complex. It can be real or something that you made up as an example of how you would use the scientific method in your daily life.  A simple example would be something like the following:

Background: Defrost the windows in the car as quickly as possible

Hypothesis: There are many possibilities. Try to be as specific as possible in the brief statement.

Example – If I get up early to defrost the windshield and be ready to leave with clear windows

Experiment: When the temperature is 40 degrees and below, I wake up at 4:15 a.m. and start the car and turn the heat and place the fan setting to 1 out of 4

I want to know how long it takes to defrost

Results: I go back in the house and wait 20 minutes and the window is defrosted.

Independent variable:

Dependent variable:

Controlled variable (i.e., constants):

Include a control in this experiment and make a conclusion about the results.
