Your essay can be based on a topic you find interesting from any of the following modules:
Module Three (parts 1 and 2) – Enforcing the Law
Module Five – Sentencing
Module Eight– Correctional Institutions
Module Nine – Community Corrections
If you decide to choose your own topic, please contact your professor to review your essay topic choice, prior to writing your essay.
Alternately, you can choose to write an essay based on one of the following:
Should the role of police change (e.g., no longer provide certain services)? If so, how should it change? If not, why should it stay the same?
Do mandatory minimum sentences reduce judicial independence? *alternate questions – Should Parliament be able to implement mandatory minimum sentences as it deems appropriate?
Should correctional institutions continue to use Administrative Segregation?
Does parole help offenders reintegrate into society?

Length: 500 to a maximum of 700
The Introduction to your paper must clearly state the position you will argue (i.e. your thesis statement).
Be concise and specific rather than broad and general. Consider all aspects and demonstrate a balanced and logical consideration of the issue you are presenting. The word count for this essay is low, so focus on one or two key points and explain them well.
Do not quote or repeat legal definitions for the sole purpose of adding to the word count. These passages will be deducted from the word count. The title page and reference page do not count towards your word count.
Your essay must use three valid sources (in addition to any class material). At least one source must be from the Humber library. Ensure that all your sources are properly cited using APA format. Please refer to the video “Essay Assignment” for an overview of valid sources.
NOTE: Essays that do not contain in-text citations and/or a reference list will receive a grade of zero.
Your paper must have a clear introduction, body and conclusion.
You must include a reference page in APA format.
Refer to the Marking Rubric posted on Blackboard for a breakdown of how the paper will be assessed.
This assignment will count towards 20% of your final grade.
Plagiarism will result in a mark of zero. Students who plagiarize will be required to meet with the Associate Dean. You can use Turnitin to ensure you have properly cited your sources. Turnitin will also be used to verify the authenticity of submissions.
Submission Instructions
Name your file Firstname_Lastname_Essay_Assignment.doc (replacing with your actual name).
All papers MUST be submitted through the Turnitin submission box (you must create an account). Emailed submissions will not be accepted nor will they be considered towards nullification of late penalties.
You must create a student account in Turnitin. The required ClassID and Enrollment password for this class are noted in the Learning Module titled “Essay Assignment”.
All submissions must be in Word (.doc, .docx) or .pdf format.
If your paper is not written in APA format it will not be graded.
Please allow three weeks after closing submission date for this assignment to be marked and returned to you, and/or your grade to be posted on Blackboard.
Late Papers
Any late papers will receive a 5% penalty per 24-hour period up to seven days (35%). No papers will be accepted after 7 days.
