Lion: the movie

The movie “Lion” tells the story – based on true events – of a 5- year-old boy (Saroo) from northwestern India who became lost at a train station in the 1990s and ended up in Kolkata (in northeastern India). He was adopted by a loving family in Australia, but he never forgot his roots. Once he was grown, this young man used “Google Earth” to track down his home and family in India and make his way back. Here’s a link to the trailer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RNI9o06vqo). Here’s a link to an interview with Saroo Brierley, the subject of this movie. “Lion” (http://www.today.com/video/-lion-inspiration-saroo-brierley-went-through-hell-on-earth-before-reuniting-with-his-mother-885178947532). The movie is available on Netflix.

Please watch the movie “Lion.” Then discuss the characteristics of India in the context of this movie.

Your textbook includes discussions of several aspects of each region. These aspects include: physical geography, demography, cultural geography (language, religion, ethnicity), political geography, economics and social well-being. What does the movie tell you about these aspects of India? What did you learn about life in India based on the movie?

If you wish to express your opinion in a concluding paragraph, please feel free to do so. However, you are not required to express an opinion.

Sources and Strategies

Basically, my goal with this assignment is to have you gain a deeper experience of South Asia in general, and about India specifically by watching and listening to this movie. Because of this, you’ll have two main sources: the movie itself, and the textbook description of India and South Asia. If you find additional sources, that’s fine. But again, my primary goal is to enable you to have a deeper look at India.
