All American presidents have made a significant contribution to the growth and development of modern-day America. Thomas Jefferson is no exception. However, different people have different views on his leadership and role in building America. This paper considers the social and political life of Thomas Jefferson, his contribution to America, and different opinions regarding his leadership and influence. Former US president Thomas Jefferson Contributed a great deal to the development and growth of the United States.
Early life and Family
Thomas Jefferson was born on 13th April 1743 in a rich family from Virginia. His father, Peter Jefferson, was a planter and slaveowner in the large Randolph’s estate previously owned by colonel William Randolph. Thomas Jefferson received his early education under tutors alongside the Randolph children. in 1752, Thomas Jefferson joined a local school run by a Scottish Presbyterian minister. Jefferson later joined college at the age of 16, Jefferson joined the college of William and Mary in Williamsburg. The college introduced the Thomas Jefferson to different influential scholars such as Isaac Newton, and John Locke. He graduated in 1762 with the highest honors and a good reputation in the college as a diligent student.
By 1767, Jefferson was admitted to the Virginia bar after studying law while working as a clerk. Peter died in 1757 and the estate was inherited by Thomas and his brother, Randolph. Jefferson inherited around 5000 acres and close to 40 slaves and took control of the property at the age of 21. In 1965, Jefferson’s sister, Jane, died which greatly saddened the young lad. In 1768, few years after receiving is inheritance, President Jefferson started the construction of the popular Monticello mansion. He used his slaves’ expertise and knowledge to create a masterpiece that he later remodeled during his presidency based on the classical European designs including the addition of the distinct octagonal dome. Jefferson served as a lawyer in colonial Virginia from 1768 to 1773 serving me Thomas Jefferson was remained an outstanding individual throughout his childhood, education, profession and adult life.
Politics and Contributions
President Thomas Jefferson served the united states for two political terms from 1801 to 1809. He was a member of the democratic republic party, that advocated for a frail federal administration and rather felt that power should be invested at a local or a state level. This party believed that if the federal government was extremely powerful it was likely to misuse its powers and exploit the rights of the American citizens. Jefferson however worked effortlessly to reduce the federal government’s size and curtail its powers. Compared with other American president who reigned after him, including Andrew Jackson he seems to have had a fairly impressive policy concerning native Americans. Basically, he opted to have native ethnic groups assimilate into the united states instead of having them forcibly removed. In 1807, He amended policy that outlawed the slavery importation, where he prohibited the shifting of slaves from other countries to America. However, this Act did not abolish slavery although it made it unlawful for new slaves to be imported into America.
Jefferson’s presidency was associated with both domestic and international successes. Locally, he implemented significant government limitations and policies during his two terms as a president. Some of these limited government polices included narrowing down the increased military expenditures. He advocated for the rights of sates and championed for both limited federal and state government taxes. In addition, he also insisted on a congress approval to and of all domestic taxes, including those on rum and whisky. The most essential clipping involved in the federal budget occurred at the military’s expense. He trimmed the navy’s expanse that Adams had effortlessly worked to establish. Further, Jefferson reacted to the seizure of the united states ships and sailors off the north African coats by the pirates in 1801, where he led the Americans into a battle to face the Islamic barbary states.
Most of Jefferson’s foreign policy achievement including the Lousian purchase from France was crucial in maintain the united states neutrality abroad. At this time, he was torn between his desire with regards to extension and the urge to avoid war Britain, Spain and France. Jefferson’s geopolitical and diplomatic administration was interfered with the thriving revolution of slavery in Haiti and an exceptionally powerful attempt by Napoleon to recapture the island in 1803. This incidence led to the acquisition of the Louisiana territory by his administration from France, which gave them full control all the region where Mississippi and tributaries was draining along with the Rocky Mountains. Further, Jefferson pursued ineffectively to conquer Spanish Florida and incorporate it I the union.
