Functional Physiology Report
Human physiology is a vast, complex discipline of biology which aims to understand and describe the mechanisms of the living human organism. During your experience in human physiology lecture, you examined processes important for normal function of the human organism. But, at times, normal function is not maintained due to a disease or disorder. Understanding the disease and disorders that impact human’s physiology is critical to better understand human physiology and help those who are impacted by diseases/disorders or medical conditions.
This assignment asks you to describe a disease/disorder or condition which impacts the human organism, paying particular attention to the functional physiology that is impacted. Though the content of your report is largely your choice, please include the following in your research:
Name and basic background on the disease or disorder you selected
Review of the normal maintenance, function, and/or homeostasis of body system(s) affected by these disease/disorder or condition
Description of how the disease/disorder – discuss physiological changes (think FUNCTIONS & MECHANISMS), compare and contrast ‘normal’, ‘resting’, or ‘healthy’ state to the disease/disorder or condition
Description of available treatments, if any – how do the available treatments work? If none available, why not? What pathways for treatment should be further explored at this time?
Brief description of at least one recent peer-reviewed, primary research article (2016 or sooner) that focuses on the disease/disorder or condition. This article can describe or examine any physiological mechanisms or changes that occur in the disease/disorder or condition.
Discuss methods, results, and conclusion of the research article.
Include discussion of important figures and tables
Examine what the strengths/weaknesses of this research are and how it contributes to the overall understanding of disease/disorder or condition.
Other evidence-based, scientific resources should be implored in your presentation (NOT Wikipedia, WebMD, Healthline, etc.), think .gov, .org, or other peer-reviewed studies and sources. Reference lists should be at least 5 sources (including peer-reviewed primary article).
Length of report, 3-5 pages, double- spaced, 12 font. Utilize MLA format for bibliography.
You can use any resource you feel necessary to complete this assignment. Please include all resources you used in a bibliography section and please use in-text citations, when appropriate.
