Conclusions:
Hence, in this project we learnt to measure the horizontal angles from electronic theodolite (Total Station) and also gain the knowledge of how to handle the equipment with proper care. We also gain the knowledge of clamping screws and how to properly use them for accurate measurement. We learnt about the temporary adjustment of the instrument like setting up the tripod stand, centering, levelling and focusing of the eye piece making it ready for the measurement. We also gained the knowledge of traversing and the types of traversing like open traverse, closed loop traverse, etc.
There are also certain limitations of these kinds of modern equipment too which are stated below:
Since, theodolite have not any mechanism to measure the horizontal distance. So, we need taping for measuring the horizontal distance and becomes more time consuming.
We cannot store the measured data in the theodolite so, its more time and resource consuming task to record the data separately.
It is difficult to measure the object when it is far from the place where theodolite is installed.
We have to manually read the reading with proper adjustment of the micrometer screw and there should be constant light source for reading the measurement clearly.
Although, it is quite a modern type of equipment than chain and compass surveying, we came up with some errors which are stated below.
The error might occur due to improper use of the tangent screws. There are two tangent screws in the theodolite so, improper use of it might mess up the whole reading.
If lower screw is not properly tightened, error might occur due to slip of the lower clamp.
Error also might have been occurred due to inaccurate bisection of the signals and also can be due to parallax and not verticality of ranging rod.
The errors might be due to the mistake in the setting of the verniers.
