Subject: Request to Conduct Research on Wellness programs to promote workplace mental health.
Summary:
I am writing to you to request to conduct research on the wellness programs to promote workplace mental health. It is important to understand the problem and the reason for the research. The research will provide a comprehensive overview of past and present wellness programs. The goal is for us to be able to identify areas of potential improvement or where there is a need for a new program.
What the Problem Is and Why It Needs to Be Investigated
Market research show that employers are expected to devote more resources towards their mental health and wellness programs in the coming years. Many employers are not investing in these programs currently, and this research could prove where there is the most of a need for such initiatives. Workplace mental health is a growing concern, with a study from the UK indicating that two out of three employees experience work-related stress. The issue is important because work-related stress is associated with a variety of negative outcomes, including low productivity and high healthcare costs.
To help promote workplace mental health it is important to understand what some of the most effective wellness programs are out there. I plan to conduct research into this topic by looking into existing data on workplace mental health about what companies are currently doing, how they are doing it and the success or lack thereof to help my company reach a solution. The goals of this research are to get a comprehensive overview of organizations’ current and past wellness programs by looking at the “what we are doing” and “how we are doing it” sections. Also, to identify where there is potential room for improvement or where there is a need for a new program.
Mental health and wellness are important in both the public and private sectors, with the latter being more identified than ever. If we can help employers identify this issue and show them how to improve their current programs, we can help promote workplace mental health.
There are many organizations that have already achieved remarkable success regarding workplace mental health, including the US Department of Veteran Affairs by offering free counselling services for their employees. Family First Health Organization was also able to achieve great success regarding workplace mental health by offering free counselling services for their employees.
What Secondary Research I Have Conducted/Will Conduct about the Problem
I have conducted research on the effectiveness of being able to reduce stress and mental wellness in the workplace. A study done by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and Randstad into how employers can improve in terms of mental health support both internally with the employees and their families as well as externally, through engaging with partner organizations such as charities, were involved in two projects that were concerned with promoting workplace mental health: Mental Health Works and Workplace Well-being. They had worked alongside a large range of employers, including IBM, Lloyds Banking Group, Royal Mail Group, O2 Telecommunications, Sainsbury’s Supermarkets where they implemented some sort of program linked with improving mental health at work. They also worked alongside various organizations involved in promoting mental health and wellbeing, such as the Center for Mental Health, Mental Health Foundation and Mind.
The study conducted revealed that the National Wellbeing Measure revealed that 1 in 6 employees reported having long-term conditions or disorders which could be a result of stress at work. The question then becomes if employers are doing as much as they can to provide some sort of mental health or wellness program at their workplaces? The results from the research looked at how companies were providing programs for employees, what was being done and what was not being done by focusing on two key areas: employee benefits and employee involvement. Another source that I will use is Journal article “Effect of a Workplace Wellness Program on Employee Health and Economic Outcomes” by Song and Baicker (2019) which is an epidemiologic study that investigates how a workplace wellness program can make a positive impact on an employee’s personal health as well as mental health.
Why We Will Benefit from My Research and Recommendations
My research will help identify gaps in current workplace mental health and wellness programs at our company. This research is important because it can help demonstrate that many of our employees are not feeling comfortable at work, and this can negatively impact their ability to perform their job. This research can also help identify where resources need to be directed so that employers can develop a comprehensive program, which will make them more competitive in the future for those who are looking for a job.
The recommendations I have made are based on the results of the previous articles that I have investigated thus far. For instance, some of the results showed that many employers were not implementing wellness programs for their employees, which suggests that there is a need for companies to provide these programs. Also, to develop a program that is effective, employers should “Address the needs of individual employees and take a preventative approach towards mental illness.” This can help ensure that the wellness program being put in place is right for your company, by looking at what you need to improve regarding mental health.
Conclusion
I am requesting to conduct research on the “wellness programs to promote workplace mental health.” It will help to understand what some of the most effective wellness programs are out there.
