HIST 202 U.S. History Since 1877
Term Paper
The New Deal marked a departure from the federal government’s traditional role in American society. While many welcomed government activism, others found it radical and anti-American. Since then, political debates have centered around what should be the proper role of government.
Assignment: You will write a five-paragraph essay that synthesizes primary and secondary source documents from Jim R. McClellan’s chapter on the “New Deal” in Changing Interpretations of America’s Past (the chapter is available as a PDF on Moodle). You are required to use at least six
of the twenty sources from that chapter (at least two per body paragraph). The course textbook should be used to provide context, but that will not count as one of the six required sources, although it, just like the other sources, must be cited in the footnotes. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO outside sources can be used for this assignment. To be clear, only the sources from McClellan’s “New Deal” and your course textbook can be used.
***
The essay will be in response to this writing prompt:
The New Deal runs afoul of American principles and our nation needs to return to the days of rugged individualism and laissez-faire.
Your essay can support or oppose the writing prompt.
Directions: Develop an argument to support your response. The paper must include the following:
Introductory Paragraph: Your introduction must include a very concisely written background of the topic, a clear thesis statement, and a list of your supporting arguments.
Body Paragraphs: You must have at least three body paragraphs. Each paragraph must have a topic sentence that supports your thesis statement, and several sentences that support the paragraph’s topic sentence. The supporting sentences must contain specific evidence to support your argument (each paragraph must use at least two sources from McClellan’s “New Deal”), not generalities that are pulled from the air.
Concluding Paragraph: The concluding paragraph should summarize your overall argument, and make a broader, bigger point. This is the last chance you have to convince your reader of your argument (thesis statement). So, don’t dismiss this section, but make it strong.
Footnotes: At the end of each paragraph, insert a footnote to list the evidence that you used. If you used the textbook, cite the author and page number – “Corbett, 485.” A citation from the McClellan’s “New Deal” can be as simple as “Source 1.”
Directions on how to insert a footnote in Microsoft Word:
Place your cursor after the punctuation of the last sentence in the paragraph
Go to the tool bar at the top of the screen
Click “References.”
Click “Insert footnote.”
The cursor will move to the footer of the page. Type your notes.
Sample footnote: 1 Corbett, 485; Source 3; Source 8.
You should only use the assigned readings for this paper. DO NOT use any outside sources. Papers that use outside sources do not meet the assignment’s purpose and will not be accepted.
Recommendations: If you have any questions, ask me early. Get started immediately locating your sources, outlining, writing, and revising. Review the Honor Code (do not plagiarize and you must do your own work).
