Assignment 1 – Exploring Service and Civic Engagement – 25 points
Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is for students to explore their previous experience with service and civic engagement. Students will also develop an initial plan for completing service-learning in the community and develop a plan for their civic engagement project
Assignment details: Please answer all of the questions listed below in some depth (at least 2 – 3 sentences per question). Use concrete examples to illustrate your answers. This assignment does NOT need to be written in essay format. Instead, you may download this document and simply answer the questions in your revised document. This assignment is due the last day of Module 3 by 11:59 p.m. and should be uploaded to Canvas.
Part 1: Exploring service
How have you experienced a sense of community?
When have you been of service to others? In what ways?
When have you been served by others? In what ways?
What did you give to others when you were providing service? What did you gain from your service experience?
What images about those being served do you carry?
Part 2: Service-learning plan
In detail, list what you hope to gain from your service-learning experience this semester. (Groups that you want to work with, skills that you want to learn, etc.)
List a few organizations you are interested in serving. Also share why you are interested in serving with each of the organizations you listed.
Which organizations have you contacted? Have you gotten a response from those organizations?
What are your next steps in order for you to begin serving at your chosen service-learning site?
How may your instructor support you at this time?
