Preliminary Research Proposal

Working title: (1) Medically – Assisted Dying and Politics (2) The Rights and Lefts of Medically- Assisted Dying in the United States

Abstract: This research paper is to compare the Democratic and Republican views on Medically- Assisted Dying in the United States. It will compare how each party’s views affect those that live in certain states. The paper will also discuss the opposing views and benefits from a Democratic and Republican state . In other words, the paper will discuss the history of MAD debated in a Democratic and Republican states. The sources used for this paper will help answer the research question: do the arguments split along party lines and are there patterns in how different parties have different justifications for their position ?

Annotated Bibliography: 2 sentences usefulness to my research project

1. Callahan, Daniel. Dugdale, Lydia. & Lerner, Barron L. (2019). Pros and Cons of Physician Aid In Dying

This article will be useful because the author does not have one position but instead discusses both views. For pro arguments, the author discusses how it would help patients from suffering. For con arguments, the author discusses the “slippery slope” issues that come with it.

2. Creamer, Ella (2002). Why Democrats Should Become the Party of Medically Assisted Dying.

This article will be useful to my research because it explains how and why the Democratic party is for MAD. New Mexico is used to describe what it is like to be pro MAD. On the other hand, the article discusses how Kentucky is a state against MAD and how that is problematic.

3. (2014). Debate: Should Physician – Assisted Suicide Be Legal?

The NPR article discusses if assisted suicide be legal. It provides the for motion argument by stating what philosophers and writers have studied. While explaining what physicians and professors’ points of view are against the motion.

4. Laws, Terri. (2019). How Race Matters in the Physician- Assisted Suicide Debate.

This article is useful because it discusses how race matters in MAD. Race can reflect how politicians make decisions. The reading highlights healthy inequities.

5. Kiska, Timothy. Strate, John. Zalman, Marvin (2001) Who Favors Legalizing Physician- Assisted Suicide? The Vote on Michigan’s Proposal B

The reading explains how Michigan legalized PAD. This article can be used to explain how and why other states should also legalize PAD.

6. T. Howard Stone J.D., LL.M & William J. Winslade. (2009). Physician- assisted suicide and euthanasia in the United States.

This article explores the ethical issues that come with MAD. The author debates on both sides, how they both use ethics and morals to debate their arguments.

7. Foley, Kathleen & Hendin, Herbert (2008). Physician – Assisted Suicide in Oregon: A Medical Perspective

The article discusses the Oregon Death with Dignity Act. It gives the perspectives of the patients, their families, and doctors to argue why MAD should be legalized in other states.

8. Why Assisted Suicide Must Not Be Legalized. Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund.

The article discusses why assisted suicide should not be legalized. It discusses issues such as bias, prejudice, the myth of free choice and self- determination.

These are good MAD sources, but only a few of them focus specifically on the political perspective. I would suggest you prioritize looking at ones that do (like number 2, above) as that might give you further leads. I did a google scholar search and I thought this reference might be worth looking at, too: Parver, C. (2005). The Politics of Dying: How the Religious Right Has Come to Influence the Right-to-die Debate. Temp. Pol. & Civ. Rts. L. Rev., 15, 449. I’m sure there are many others if you add the political perspective key-words to your search.

This book looks promising, too: Hackey, R. B., & Olszewski, T. M. (2021). Today’s Health Care Issues: Democrats and Republicans. ABC-CLIO.
