Unit 1 Assignment: Food Journal

For this assignment you will create a food journal to record what you ingest for three days and analyze the results. The purpose of this three day diet analysis assignment is to provide you with a greater understanding of your personal diet. If you are uncomfortable with analyzing or sharing your own diet, you may create a three day journal of a friend’s or family member’s diet.

To begin this assignment:

  1. Go to: Fitday.com (Links to an external site.) and create a free account.
  2. Locate and use the log to document what you eat.

Write a brief assessment of your journal assignment and answer the following questions:

  1. What are the recommendations discussed in Fitday?
  2. How does your diet compare to the recommendations you received from Fitday?
  3. How does your diet compare to the U.S. Dietary Guidelines, discussed in your textbook?
  4. How many servings from each food group did you consume?
  5. How might you modify your diet to obtain the recommended servings for each food group? Make sure that you discuss specific nutrients including:
    1. Carbohydrates
    2. Lipids
    3. Protein
    4. Sodium
    5. Calcium
    6. Saturated fat
    7. Trans fat
  6. What are some (three or more) nutrient-rich foods that you could add to your daily diet?
  7. Examine one of the food labels that you used when completing your 3 day diet. Make sure to list the following components:
    1. Total calories per serving
    2. Percentage of calories from fat
    3. Total amount of carbohydrates (in grams)
    4. Total amount of protein (in grams)
    5. Total amount of fiber (in grams)

Requirements

Your responses should be thorough, well-conceived college-level responses that are grammatically correct. When you write your assessment, support your answers with facts from the textbook and your conclusions. There is no maximum number of pages you should include in your journaling assignment, however you should include as much detail as possible.
