Write a MLA-formatted 1000-1250 word essay: use good essay structure and the conventions of literary analysis to make and defend an argument, using ONE of the topic possibilities below:

1. Choose one poet that we’ve read in class and find other poems by that author: Write an essay analyzing that poet’s writing style.

2. Discuss the theme of family in at least two but not more than four of the poems.

3. Discuss the way gender roles are portrayed in at least two but not more than four of the poems we’ve read for the class.

4. Do an in-depth explication of one poem that we’ve read for class: discuss the way in which the poet’s “tools” (rhyme, rhythm, meter, imagery, etc.), create the visceral experience of the poem.

5. Discuss the theme of war or violence in at least two but not more than four of the poems.

Use good essay structure that includes an introduction paragraph with a strong thesis statement, well-crafted paragraphs that build your argument through the use of specific quotes and moments from your chosen stories, and a conclusion that recaps and strengthens the main points of your argument.

This essay should be typewritten and double-spaced, using Times New Roman 12pt font and one-inch margins. All essays should be proofread for spelling and grammar. Use MLA formatting for in-text citations and a Works Cited page.

Essays will be graded with the following in mind:

Introduction paragraph that includes a strong thesis statement that clearly connects makes an argument. (10 points)
Paragraphs that make clear points connected to the essay’s thesis statement. (20 points)
Use of supporting quotes that are properly cited, appropriate to the thought of the paragraph, appropriately placed and explained, and of appropriate length. (10 points)

Grammar, punctuation, and prose style. (10 points)
Appropriate length (1000-1250 words). (10 points)
