EDUC 6260 : Discussion: How Do You Promote Diversity

Promoting diversity in an organization provides a competitive advantage by focusing on attracting the most talent—regardless of gender, race, age, religion, or any other characteristic. Increasing diversity of staff on campus echoes the increasing diversity of students, who need role models, mentors, and a climate that demonstrates the diversity it teaches.
Imagine that you are in the process of recruiting for a new admissions counselor. To this point, the applications you have received have not been from as diverse a pool of individuals as you would like. Work with your classmates to determine how to address this situation, as if you were on a search committee together.

What recruitment and selection strategies might you use to increase applicant diversity?
What job specifications could you legally include that encouraged diverse applicants? Remember to describe the working environment.
The importance and benefits of diversity is especially salient in this age of global demographic shifts and increasing internationalization of campuses. Diversity promises to be an integral part of any hiring strategy. Additionally, you will need to also think about succession planning to ensure that when a vacancy occurs you will have trained staff ready to assume the needed job responsibilities.Required Readings
