reading and answer questions
Please answer the following questions based on a close reading and analysis of the given materials.
1. Closely observe the Spring Festival along the River (painting). What can you learn from this painting about the social economic life of Kaifeng, the capital of the Northern Song (960-1127), at the peak of the Tang Song transition? To answer this question, I’d like to have you capture a particular scene or character in the long scroll, and analyze it. For example, from this painting I have captured the following image. We see two people carrying things with camels. What can you say about this scene based on your reading of Professor Yoshinobu Shiba’s article about massive social economic changes during the Tang Song transition?
This is just an example. You should observe the long scroll, “the Spring Festival along the River,” and capture an image for close analysis. Based on your reading of Shiba’s article, write up an analysis of the image captured.
2. Based on a close reading of the “Ten Thousand Word Memorial,” what do you think Wang Anshi sought to achieve with his plans for reform? Why did Wang Anshi think it was necessary for the state to do? How did he think were most urgently needed to the impending problems of the day?
3. Based on your reading of Peter Bol’s article, why do you think Wang Anshi was so critical of Sima Guang’s position, and vice versa? In other words, you are expected to write a critique of Wang Anshi’s position from Sima Guang’s perspective, and Sima’s position from Wang’s perspective.
You should write your answers (200-300 words per question) to these questions
