Module 4 Deliverable: Force Field Analysis

  • Read and understand all commentary in Lesson 11-12, and Brown (2011) information (as noted)
  • The Force Field Analysis (FFA) is a useful technique for looking at all the forces for and against a decision or, in our case, to contemplate an organizational change effort. In essence, it is a specialized method of weighing pros and cons. By understanding and applying this assessment, organizations will be able to strengthen the forces supporting a decision, and reduce the impact of restraining forces.
  • Your team should SELECT one company from the list below,or a company of your choice, and research the company using the FFA as a framework for assessment.
  • Module 4 Deliverable is a professional TEAM presentation that identifies a change initiative of the organization (current/desired state), lists the forces for/against the change, and ranks the forces according to intensity of impact.
  • A comprehensive Force Field diagram, identifying opposing- ranked forces, including justification, will be the primary visual for the presentation, conducted in Zoom, ALL team members must present.
  • Lessons 11-12 will provide guidance on understanding and application of the FFA model, whereas Lessons 8-9 (Module 3) will provide insight and direction on the planning/design/delivery of captivating presentations. Your challenge is to work in a collaborative manner during planning/design/delivery.

Team Presentation Outline

Introduction: Provide a brief introduction of the organization, as well as the FFA model.

Body of Presentation based on FFA Visual:

  1. Describe the proposal for change or the DESIRED STATE. What is the desired outcome after the change? Be clear, specific and focused. Be certain take time on this, as this will be the focal point of your analysis.
  2. Describe the CURRENT STATE. What is the present state, as related to the desired outcome? Once again be clear about what is currently happening, or existing, in the organization.
  3. List all of the DRIVING FORCES, the forces that help to drive the change effort. These forces tend to initiate a change and keep it going.
  4. List all of the RESTRAINING FORCES, the forces that serve to maintain the status quo. These forces tend to decrease the effect of the driving forces.
  5. Based on the intensity of each item, RATE each force; from 1 (weak) to 5 (strong).
  6. Provide a SUMMARY or a conclusion on your findings, possibly discussing the most obvious restraining forces for the organization and the forces that provide the most support in order for the change to take place.

NOTE: You are NOT to write on how the restraining forces should be overcome. At this point, you are simply analyzing using the FFA. You can make simple speculation, but the conclusion should simply summarize the highlights of your assessment.

Scaffolding Activity #1 will be discussed at our Module 4 Zoom session this week.

  • You may choose from the following organizations, as examples, or select a company of your own: Graphiq, Wegmans, Walt Disney, Baird, Chik oil A, Workday, SoFi, Genetech, US Navy, Nike.
