This is a group discussion. You should review the readings associated with this module (including the assigned case if applicable) before participating in this discussion. In your initial post, please provide your responses to/analysis of the below questions. After you post your response(s) you will then have access to your group members’ postings–please respond to/comment on a minimum of two other group members’ posts.
Your initial post and subsequent comments will be graded based on the Discussion Rubric. To access this rubric, click the three dot icon and choose “show rubric.” Please add your initial post by Wednesday at midnight, and then respond to peers by midnight on Saturday. Initial postings will be marked down per day late after Wednesday; responses posted after Saturday will not be graded.
Specifically, please read the following case: Robert A. Caro, Master of the Senate, Ch. 17, “The Nothing Job,” pp. 383-419 (Links to an external site.).
And then answer the following (max of 500 words total):
- Why did Johnson handle McFarlane the way that he did? Why was Johnson okay with his nickname “Lying down Johnson” and even promoted it?
- Two of the main ways through which Johnson was able to make “something from nothing” were through information power and expert power. Please briefly explain how he was able to develop each of these sources of influence. [Hint: think about the state of the senate at the time; describe it in terms of the context with respect to the diagnostic framework]
