Aim

The aim of the module is to provide an understanding on the fundamentals of process control and instrumentation techniques used in process industries. The topics cover different types of process control loops, its functions, operational modes and instruments for measurement applicable to process industry.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course the student should be able to:

Understand the basic principles of process control techniques in industrial processes.

Development of Piping and Instrumentation diagrams.

Recognize and understand the different types of controllers.

Analysis and application the stability criteria of a control system.

Acquire knowledge on the basics of data communication.

Explain the importance of calibration, installation and the maintenance of measurement systems.(

Interpret the performance characteristics of relevant measurement systems including pressure, flow, temperature and level measurement.

Task

Dry Exhaust Gas Scrubber

The student will choose a specific industry and process i.e. oil and gas industry – distillation process using different resources such as journals, websites, and any online sources. A comprehensive report with a minimum of 2000 words will be carried out by the student fully discussing and illustrating the stated topics below. Proper citation and referencing using the Harvard referencing style must be observed.

Give the details of the industry and the process chosen for study. [5]

Draw the Process Flow Diagram, and develop Piping & Instrumentation

Diagram P&ID of any one process from the chosen industry. [30]

Explain in detail the Feed and the Product streams [10]

Identify and explain the types of pumps, valves, equipment, and signals in the

Piping & Instrumentation diagram drawn. [20]

Discuss about the manipulated and controlled variable of the process loop from

Piping and Instrumentation diagram drawn. [10]

Detail the control system configuration with suitable justification [10]
