Watch: Leadership Theories
Hi everyone. This is Week 1 of nerves 721. So this week is going to be talking about the content that we’ll be having. This specifically the leadership theories and events. So one of the things that you may have noticed is that they have few readings from the Harvard Business Review in this course. In a really health care, whether we like it or not, does have some business overtones to it. And we’ve got this ledger. I have cash coming in and cash coming out. And just like in business, they do have to. Your business has to stay afloat. So your future role will involve both influencing and challenging the status quo. Becoming an effective change agent, innovator, a patient advocate. All of these require an understanding of things like organizational culture, business ramifications, strategy, and effective leadership in order to influence positive change. They really are multiple aspects of leadership. And these can really be applied to yourself, your department, and your aunt, or your organizational level. What is leadership? There are some 850 and county definitions of leadership out there. And not one has been accepted as the best. In your course readings and supplemental study, you’re going to come across a lot of what I call one-liners about what leadership is. These one liners are actually part of the, those 850 definitions. Many are great. In fact, a very inspiring, but I think that you’re going to find that a good deal of situational, there are good deal of situational factors in leadership. Meaning that some leader, some situations are going to offer different styles. Ultimately. However, I believe that as you study the various areas, you’re going to come across a few that really resonate with you. Whether you aspire to become that type of leader, or maybe you already are at least partially already there. So we start week 1 with the leadership theories. There are both classic or traditional theories. They’re either referred to as classic, traditional or early. And then another category of what we call more contemporary theories. So some of the classics, your textbook is going to go over them very briefly, but I want to highlight a few of them. There’s the great man theory. This one, you think nobility, you’re born into a position of leadership. And then there are trait theories. For instance, Jim Collins, CEO LLI, and as he is known for his level five leadership. This is actually available in the Harvard Business Review. Comments really found You mean traits of high level leaders who took companies from mediocre to great. And those two traits were humility and persistence or well. So I would encourage you to take a look at Jim Collins Theory. And just as an aside, Harvard Business Review is available the LU online library in the Business Source Complete database. The database again is called the Business Source Complete. Another of the classic theories is a behavior approach. Business literature likes this a lot. Actually nursing literature likes this one. I want to think of the cruises k, s and pastors leadership challenge. That is an excellent theory. I think that I think are really resonate with a lot of you. And it’s all over in the advanced practice nursing literature. That another classic is the power and influence approach for which there are several areas, but basically, someone may have a dominating power or an Empower, empower. Everybody, read the Steve Jobs. But that’s always an interesting study in a leadership theory. What Steve Jobs did. So moving into the contemporary theories then, these contemporary theories and particularly for nursing, are continuing to evolve. They really differ from the classics in that thing to be effective leadership encompasses multiple aspects. So that includes liter, this situation, the followers and organizational culture or setting. So some of that there you could consider relational and social models. Those tend to focus on collaboration as opposed to the leader. Then there’s transformational leadership. There’s authentic leadership theory, adaptive leadership. There’s one called Appreciative Inquiry, which I was really pleased to see included in the text this here. This is heavily used in coaching theory of which I’m a big fan. There is reflective leadership. This is written about in the Jones textbook that is one of the recommended texts. And then there’s complexity and quantum leadership theories and these whole textbooks and those leadership theories as well. So with that in mind, in addition to this week’s discussion board, this week’s content is really applicable to your major assignment in Week 5. In week 5, we’ll be utilizing a contemporary healthcare scenario that requires change. So rather than wait to Week 5 to view that, I would highly recommend that you read over the case study for me, five major paper. And have that in the back of your mind as you read for this week’s leadership theories. And because you are going to apply two of the leadership theories to that case scenario. So you might just want to be thinking about that as you read over these many theories this week. So that’s all I have for today. And I hope that content speaks, speaks to you and let you okay, Take care.
