Grade 10: Hydration and Sports
Unit: Cell Biology
Key Concept and Related Concept: Systems – Function, Interaction and Consequences
Global Context: Scientific and technical Innovation
Statement of Inquiry: Developing a keen understanding of cellular processes enables us to utilize existing systems to improve human existence and the rest of the biosphere.
This task is a summative assessment:
Criterion D: Reflecting on the Impacts of Sports Drinks on Cells
Task Focus: An investigation on the effects of sports/energy drinks versus water hydration on cellular function during athletic events.
Task Guiding Questions:
What do cells need to stay healthy, and where do these nutrients come from?
What are electrolytes, and what do cells use them for?
What could happen if a cell is deficient in electrolytes?
What are the pros and cons of drinking your selected sports/energy drink during an athletic event?
Is drinking water sufficient enough to keep hydrated during athletic events?
What are the health risks of drinking too much sports/energy drinks?
Is the advertising of your sports/energy drink accurate?
Task Instructions:
Select and sports/energy drink made in China and find the ingredients it contains.
Investigate the ingredients’ effects on cells, and remember to consider the quantities present in your chosen drink.
Discuss whether there is a need for sports/energy drinks during an athletic event if a person drinks water and eats a balanced diet?
Often companies use scientific words during the advertisement of these drinks, define these if they are used on the packaging or during tv advertising. Evaluate the validity of these advertised statements.
Write an essay of your research findings with a 1200 word limit.
