Standard 8: Instructional Strategies
The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies to encourage learners to develop deep understanding of content areas and their connections, and to build skills to apply knowledge in meaningful ways.

Creating Nearpod lessons helps me fulfill Standard 8: Instructional Strategies because they easily target the multiple intelligences for both my virtual and on-campus students. I can present visuals by uploading online sources/images or simply have my students show their understanding by uploading their own images as well. There is even a tool to do virtual tours and to upload music. Our collaboration boards support learning for both interpersonal and intrapersonal development. Including discussion/collaboration boards and embedding interactive games (e.g. the drawing tool), allows my logical, verbal, and naturalistic learners to express themselves and their learning. To help with movement, I always include a slide within my Nearpod lessons to either stretch or play a game. For these examples; view my Artifact 8A, Lesson 1, Unification of the Hawaiian Islands and the “Structure/Activity” section. The game example in my lesson plan involved grouping students into two groups, switching to one side of the classroom, and matching our large vocabulary words to their definitions. The next group needed to check their answers then try it themselves. We did a few rounds to get good practice in. It helped get our eyes off of the laptops, and the movement gave my students a chance to let some energy out.
Artifact 8B is another lesson plan, but it is designed as an agenda format. This plan involved multiple instructional strategies such as direct instruction and modeling during our review (section #2), implementing freedom and power with a choice board (section #3) which also aided in independent and interactive instruction as I walked around asking questions and checked for understanding, and lastly, experiential instruction was implemented through making learning meaningful based on my questions and prompts and having students respond to a final prompt in their journals (section #5).
